my dad had a discussion tonight the differences between the political and economic clout as it relates to Mexicans and Cubans. As I put my thoughts together, I think about the successes of Antonio Villargroisa and Barack Obama. Being able to transcend race, they have been able to be seen as men of aptitutude instead of men of color. And no, being a hispanic american mayor of a large city or a african american senator of a key demographic midwestern state does'nt mean you are selling out.It means you have what it takes.
what it takes means you have the ability to work with a code of honor. it means you can see beyond color or ethnicity. you have an ability to think outside the box, meaning that you are able to go outside your comfort zone to see new ideas and work with a new perspective.you are able to communicate effectively to a universal audience.
Where Cruz Bustamente failed to become a Hispanic Govenor of California, Barack Obama succeeds as a African American potential front runner for the presidency. Not only did Mr. Bustamante failed to realize that raising taxes is a sure way to defeat, he was not able to rise over the racism of Mecha.
the same that racism has a new face, the new face of empowerment must have a new voice.and the mayor of La and the senator from Illinios are the front running leaders of that voice.
