so im sitting here on my home computer which is a custom built one, with parts that should be functioning together fairly decently. although...
i seem to have a little blue screen situation:
machine_check_exception comes up quite often, this, from what i understand, is a hardware issue. it could be newly installed hardware, heat issues, memory issues, or a harddrive issue.
the new pieces of hardware would include a new soundboard and memory. while ive been told multiple times its the memory im thinking its not. i bluescreen when i do graphically oriented user interactive programs. i.e. games. i may have just one game up and msn messenger and it will be fine, 2 games it gets a little slow (not too terribly), but if i have just one game, msn and winamp up im pretty much doomed to blue screen at any minute. althought i can have two messengers with 3 IMs, 4 browser windows up, and photoshop open and not have any problems at all. i can watch movies on it just fine, with sound of course. the game is said to have a memory leak and has been the target of multiple hacker attacks (funcom = s***, dont buy thier games), but i seriously doubt it would have affected my end as it was attacks on the server, not clients.
at any rate i switched the cable on the harddrive so the slave was at the end and the master was on the middle connection. it actually seemed to help quite a bit. but i only have one OS on them, and the second one is pretty much used for backing up larger files. the mother board has 4 memory slots and i have 4 memory sticks, ive tried every possible combination and all have had the same results. i seriously doubt its a memory issue. im narrowing it down to sound or video cards since the harddrives are fairly new and were used in my old computer with no problems. my video card is a Nvidia geforce 4 (pci) and my sound card is a Sounds Blaster Live 24 bit. im sure heat isnt an issue as i run the computer with the main side panel off. the power supply is new and as far as i know isnt having any problems. if anyone has any ideas please shoot them my way, ive tried contacting the manufacturer and havnt gotten a response, so i have to rely on people i know and websites like this ;) thanks in advance.

| Antichrist, 9 to 5 advertises on Air America. They claim they a can fix most computer problems in about an hour at $65.00 per hour. Might be a good time to admit defeat and call in the troops. |

| i fiddled with the memory some more and got some unexpected results. with just 1 stick in the first or second slot the monitor doesnt display everything but as far as i can tell the computer is on, couldnt really determine if there was any hard drive activity or not. there is no biod on the main board, and its a fairly new amd athlon processor (dont know what speed). so i left two sticks in slots 3 and 4, its only been running on them for a little while now so its too soon to tell if that was the problem or not. i dont overclock my cpu or graphics card (mainly because i dont know how) but my room mate went in a while back to make sure they werent, and did it again after i put the memory in 3 and 4. it seems like the cpu over clocks its self automatically on startup. i seem to always get overclock errors after a nasty crash or hardware reconfiguration. sometimes the bluescreen wont pop up and it will just freeze, i assume its pretty much the same thing since ive not seen a blue screen thats said something other than machine_check_exception. ill see how this new memory thing works out though. could just be slots 1 and 2 are bad on the mother board.

Digg It!

After you verify that it's not your ram and you suspect your audio card to be the culprit, take it out and use your onboard sound for a while. If that works, you either need to update your drivers or get a new card.
If it still happens and you think it's your video card, you can do that same thing because you mentioned your gforce 4 is a pci card, which implies you have onboard video. You should make sure and disable onboard features if you are not using them in your bios, this also may cause conflicts.
Also, if you can run one pci device but not both without seeing the blue screen, you may want to check your power supply. This is an often overlooked and under-rated piece of hardware in your box. If you can't power your gear, your gear will fail you. Loosen that grip on your wad and get you a nice power supply. I know this from personal experiences, it's often the first thing I check after memory if I encounter a problem.
If you've ever tried to overclock your cpu or graphics card, you can also run into instabilities, though you're more likely to see a forced reboot than a blue screen in these situations, but I suppose one is possible. If you've increased the voltage to your cpu, there is a good chance that you may have overloaded your cheap powersupply (or even a half way decent one for that matter).
And if everything I've mentioned above does not get your box working, Mr. Antichrist, I think it's God's way of telling you to go live in a cave and ditch technology. Maybe get you a big walking stick, grow a five foot beard and let your hair grow down to your ass dude, because your box is fried, and it's time for you to become a hermit.
