over the years the music industry has pulled alot of s***. making bands specifically for the sake of pulling in more money, screwing really good bands out of deals, created tv networks and award shows, the goes on. what i dont like is bands like icp, linkin park, and milli vanilli (the bands made by labels) who dont write their own damn music, and on their own sound like s***.
ever hear of a band called Tatu? it featured two russian "lesbians" the sole purpose of this band was to make music for a record label and get money, the marketting idea behind this band was that sex sells, and there were too many queer ass boybands. so they made a girl band (kinda, both the ). its decent music but its composed on the idea that people will buy it because its two girls making out on stage during and between songs. purely retarded homoerotic s***. and then youve got really decent bands out there who wont be picked up by a record label because theyre just like all the other bands that already have deals.
so in order to get into the business now an artist or group has to compose and entire demo of songs that span multiple genres. one band may have a metal song and the next track will be a f***ing polka party, and the one after that could be moody blues. these records are sold on the idea of "if they buy the entire record for just that one song, its a score." well the internet is slowly bumping that idea out the door. so while the musicians who have already made it big (and refuse to bow down to the new musicians) complain about pirates and s***, the record company is also killing the music industry by not taking in new bands. most new bands are one hit wonders, they have one good song that gets too much airtime and then you never hear of them again. the music industry is just as bad as the people sharing music over the internet on many fronts.

| I totally agree with you.But lets paraphrase a newly released book about politics by saying that thanks to itunes and ipods, the music industry is people powered, and is determined by the netroots.Grunge is a perfect example of a musical genre that was people powered, not made up by MTV,record executives and whatnot. Thanks to that surge at the beginning of the nineties we have a whole genre devoted to non-mainstream music called alternative music. But realize that radio stations can only play so many songs, for their playlist are limited.

| You're right! The worst part of the whole deal is that upcoming bands these days and even ones that have been around for a generation or so no longer even write their own music! Music is about expression and art...when you are on stage singing and playing words and notes written out for you by an out source, you're mearly putting on a performance...and its s***. I have made a point to dedicate myself to local bands everywhere i go. I listen to everything they've got and give them pointers when i think it could help. I will go far distances just to support a band i think deserves to make it big. I've seen some go far, and others crash and burn but it seems like getting heard is not the hard part, but being given the freedom to continue to write your own music after a contract is signed is almost unheard of anymore. I really wish i had the finances to start up my own record label. The world of music would take a drastic turn if someone encouraged bands to express themselves instead of just performing. |
