1969 - Present In 2005, Margaret Spellings was sworn in as the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education. Previously, Secretary Spellings spent six years as Senior Advisor to the then-Governor George W. Bush, and was Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy to Bush. She was one of the chief authors of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, which aims at reforming primary and secondary education by committing our schools to bringing all students up to grade level or better. Spellings is the first mother to have school-aged children as she serves as Education Secretary. |
