Elaine L. Chao

1969 - Present Elaine L. Chao joined The President's Cabinet as the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor in 2001, and is the first Asian American woman to be appointed into the President's Cabinet in history. She is also President Bush's only original cabinet member. Born in Taiwan in 1953, Secretary Chao arrived in the U.S. at the age of eight. In 1986, Secretary Chao was sworn in as Deputy Administrator of the Maritime Administration in the U.S. Department of Transportation. In 1989, she was nominated to be Deputy Secretary of Transportation, and in 1991 Chao was Director of the Peace Corps. She was the first Asian American to serve in all of her previous positions. |
