Robert M. Gates

1969 - Present Born in Kansas in 1943, Dr. Robert M. Gates currently serves as the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Defense since December of 2006. Before Dr. Gates was known as the Secretary of Defense, he was known as the Deputy Director of Central Intelligence in 1986, and the Director of Central Intelligence in 1991. Secretary Gates spent approximately 27 years as an intelligence professional in the CIA since 1966, and between that time, he spent nearly nine years at the National Security Council. After Dr. Gates left the CIA, he became President of Texas A&M University in 2002. He is the author of the autobiography, From the Shadows: The Ultimate Insiders Story of Five Presidents and How They Won the Cold War, published in 1996. |
