Carlos Gutierrez

1969 - Present Born in Havana, Cuba in 1953 and raised in the United States, Carlos Gutierrez was sworn into office as the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce on February 7, 2005. In 2000, he was named chairman of the board of Kellog Company, the youngest in the company's history. Secretary Gutierrez is vigorously invovled in U.S.-Cuba policy as he also serves as co-chair for the Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba. He is a stong supporter for the Bush Administration's policy of helping Cuba regain freedom from dictatorship. Gutierrez is furthermore the President's chief partner working with Congress to form a comprimising immigration legislation. The Secretary's personal top priority is to pry open global markets for U.S. companies to build a stronger economy. He was the main component to the successful passage of CAFTA-DR, an extraordinary agreement that strips away trade barriers, and expands export opportunities. |
