Mike Johanns

Mike Johanns was sworn in as the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture on January 21, 2005. Prior to this positon, Johanns grew up in Iowa on a dairy farm, served on the Lancaster County Board from 1983-1987, and on the Lincoln City Council 1989-1991. He was elected mayor of Lincoln, Nebraska in 1991, reelected in 1995, and skillfully ran as Nebraska's governor in 1998. During his six years in office as the Secetary of Agriculture, Johanns enacted a Value-Added Agriculture Initiative and signed into law the "Agricultural Opportunities and Value-Added Partnership Act." Johanns also served as chairman of the Governor's Biotechnology Partnership, and as a member of the National Governors' Association Johanns' main concentration laid on issues such as drought relief, agriculture, ethanol, and the 2002 Farm Bill.
