When I heard of her assassination, I was crushed. Although it did not come as surprise, I was beside myself with outrage with the bitter news. I admire her greatly, and was filled with such a huge sense of loss for humanity.
She was a shining light for the people of Pakistan, and for the world. Articulate and dedicated to what she saw as her destiny, she returned to almost certain death, and she knew it.
A couple of days have passed, and the unreality of her vanishing from among us with the finality of death has not really sunk in as yet. But it has belatedly dawned on me that, for all of the great loss, she is now a martyr. She is gone from among us, but she is still with us, and her followers and her movement for the people may very well gain strength from her martyrdom.
That is not what her and our enemies intended. And that is definitely not the outcome we would have preferred. But as they say, the Lord works in mysterious ways. Her martyrdom may be a greater fertilizer for the growth of democracy in Pakistan than would have been here almost certain election as Prime Minister.
Now she cannot be touched by the enemies of democracy, and her memory can only grow in stature. This could be a positive outcome from what is a huge tragedy for humanity.
