In Dubious Battle

Yesterday...I went into an auto parts store for the "hairy one"  He wrote down what he needed understanding that the wife is an AAA Plus card carrying member for a damned good reason.  All around the store were signs telling people to "ask if they need help in Spanish".  To me, this is all good, except I, an English speaker, could not find help in English.  I can speak Spanish, but not enough to describe the autopart, and no one could help me because believe it or not no one in the store could read what my husband wrote.  A "godsent customer" was able to help me get the part by explaining it to the counter person in Spanish.  I guess I was angry too.  Then I saw this article and I had to respond.  I guess this is my turning point in understanding the frustration of those who see this as a "troublesome" path we are heading for.  When I saw the American store, with the American name, owned by an American company where we speak English everyday, and could find no one in that store to read a simple few words in English...I got the point.

This may be the point in which the tide turns against the "administration", and possibly the Democrats if they do not take a public stand against this.  American people who drive trucks are one of a breed who have been "glorified" in legend and song.  They are the American version of the everyman because of their diversity.  Unlike other heros, Americans fully understand what they do, and how valuable they are to us.  Their value is not "idological" in nature, and is not represented by flags and righteous words.  Their value to America is tangable when we go to the grocer, or order a product.  If one works in a factory, he watches as the product he put his hands to is loaded onto the transport, and trusted to a man who may not have a well defined body, or dressed in a suit,  but a man more common to us in our daily life. A man who looks like our neighbour.

Well sisters and brothers, now it is us.  When the men who drive trucks stop delivering the goods and services in protest...we will suffer.  When they block the roads with their trucks...we will suffer.  When they have to resort to "less peaceful" means to hold on to their jobs and go to jail...we will suffer.  The first time a Mexican truckdriver can't read a traffic sign and destroys a family...it could be yours.

And if we sit on our duffs and keep letting the "administration" internationalize our jobs, pretty soon you won't have to worry about calling India to get service, it will be in your postal code.

You see, my problem in the store is related to the problem we might face as these non English speakers cross our borders and can go anywhere they want in our country.  Sure, my little auto part may not seem important to you, but then those behind the counter were not driving a big transport truck either.  I guess what I see here is that now every one of us will be affected by non english speakers.  We all drive on the roads, we all are exposed to the big trucks on those roads, and all of us could be put in danger of a non english speaker failing to understand a street sign, or not understanding the various highway rules of each state. 

Yes, I say that at least the Mexican truckdrivers who cross into the US take the same test, in English that the truckdrivers must take in the US.  Remember, not even to the regular American citizen, is driving a right.  Why should an American truckdriver have a burden placed on him that foriegn nationals do not?  However, I see this as another form of "outsoursing".  Perhaps this will lead to bipassing American docking stations all together in favor of Mexican ones where the labour is cheaper.  Tell me MiC, in all of the outsoursing of jobs...can you mention a product or service where the labour saving has been passed to the consumer?

I think our truckdrivers will "stop this" in their own way.  When you hear the country western singer's "Trucker's Anthem" (what ever song may be in the works), you will know that they are hard at work, in their own way, fighting against this latest attempt to "outsource".

And ya know...I support them too.  I understand.

I don't think AA is "anti Mexican" as much as he is "anti illegal alien"  Here in Arizona, most of the illegal aliens are hispanic.  So yes...it may seem, because he refers to the illegal alien within the context of our reality here in Arizona, and our closest "threat" is the southern border, I guess I see it differently.

I am "anti illegal alien" also.  I am also "pro labour".
