If this sounds like a partisan attack of George Bush related to the collapse of a bridge 1100 miles away from Washington DC, it is. It is in direct response to the televised and incredibly partisan Rose Garden press conference held by George Bush this morning, in lieu of a sincere expression of compassion or attempt to unite Americans following yesterday afternoon's tragedy.
I don't blame President Bush for the Minneapolis bridge collapse any more than I blame him for our looming energy crisis. Ignoring our nation's infrastructure and growing dependency on foreign oil is a cumulative effort that was started with President Reagan and improved upon by the Administrations to follow. Bush is only guilty for rapidly accelerating this complete disregard for basic domestic needs and fundamental securities.
As Bush inexplicably attempts to blame Democrats for this bridge collapse by pointing to the congressional Democratic resistance in funding an illegal, unnecessary, and devastating trillion dollar foreign war; we should remember that President Bush only invests in nonrenewable resources such as war, the petrochemical industry, corporate welfare, tax cuts, mega-churches, spin-doctors, and political capital. Of all the renewable resources that this Administration ignores, people -- whether it be their economic security, medical care, personal freedoms, or their lives -- seen to be the most neglected renewable resource by far.
The interstate highway bridge that collapsed is federally owned and constructed. Although Bush pledges to rapidly reconstruct this bridge (much like he pledged to rapidly reconstruct New Orleans), his press secretary Tony Snow warned us that the economic responsibility lies primarily with the State. At this point, the federal government has pledged only $5 million for the reconstruction of a bridge estimated to eventually cost the State $125 million. So this is just another empty promise of the compassionate conservative federal government to live up to their obligation of helping the people, with no material intent of ever doing so. Our Decider literally promises us a bridge to nowhere.
In his press conference this morning, President Bush stated "we are in prayer for those who suffered." I'm sure he means it. A hope and a prayer are all we really have going for us when these people are in power.

Free Thinker, Did you get a chance to watch the whole Press Conference? Bush spoke briefly about the bridge tragedy, and then launched directly into an attack of Democrats for failing to approve his spending bills before going into summer recess. This sort of thing wouldn't happen if only the Congress did exactly what he wanted them to do!!! "If Congress doesn't pass the spending bills by the end of the fiscal year, Cabinet secretaries report that their departments may be unable to move forward with urgent priorities for our country," Bush said. "This doesn't have to be this way."

MIC, All I got to see was the one and a half minute clip that was posted. If he did that sort of tirade after that, you are right. There is absolutely no need to mix a tragedy with bitter partisan politics.

| Well, I'm sure the timing was simply accidental . . . like the time(s) he talked about Osama bin Laden at the beginning of a sentence, and segue wayed into Saddam Hussein before he reached the period.

"This doesn't have to be this way" Bush today, complaining about the lack of Congress' progress in sending him bills before taking a month long vacation in August. Let us remember Aug 2001. An intelligence agent went to Crawford (where Bush was taking a month long vacation) and gave him a Presidential Daily Briefing entitled "Bin Laden determined to strike US." And that agent was told by Bush "ok, you have covered your ass now." Just before Bush's Aug vacation, the CIA director went to his National Security Advisor (Condaloma Rice) "with his hair on fire" to tell her that the chatter had risen to an alarming level and it looked like an attack was to come soon on US soil. So, Bush and his pals ignored detailed threats about the Sept 01 attacks in Aug 01. (and before). Many advisors told the Bushies that Iraq would fall into a sectarian war prior to the US invasion. They ignored the advice. So for President Dumbass to stand in front of the American people saying "This doesn't have to be this way" he should be impeached on the spot for just being an idiot.

Remember the hypothetical speech that Paul Craig Roberts penned, the kind of speech President Bush is likely to deliver after the next BIG terrorist attack? My administration knew that there would be more attacks from these terrorist who hate us and our way of life, and are determined to destroy every one of us. If only more of you had believed me, and supported my war on terror, these new attacks would not have happened. Our security efforts were impaired by the Democrats' determined attempts to surrender to the terrorists, by forcing our withdrawal from Iraq, and by civil libertarian assaults on our necessary security measures. If only more Americans had trusted their government, this would not have happened. I think that today we had a little sneak preview of this speech when Bush attempted to shift the tragedy of a collapsed bridge upon the uncooperative Democrats. The script is already written -- we can't allow the play to continue. The cure is not armed revolt; it is impeachment of Bush and Cheney.

Harry Reid: As you know, one reason that we have the fires burning in Southern California is global warming. Barbara Boxer: "...the ability of the state's National Guard has been compromised because too much of their equipment and personnel is in Iraq." "We'll be polite, but frankly that's not a solution," California's Democratic lieutenant governor, John Garamendi, said on the eve of the presidential visit. "How about sending the national guard back from Iraq?" Guess your appaled that the dems would do this too?

Digg It!

I am no fan of Bush, but I just watched the video and I honestly did not get the same interpretation that you did. I think the proof will come with time as to what the Federal Government will do. The only thing that I noticed is that he still can not speak!
Let's give this a few days to see what happens. After all, it is less then 24 hours old. I feel that the outpouring of concern from others in the government will get more pushed over there.
But, I do understand your point about empty promises. New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast are great examples of the Feds money mismanagement.
Maybe Haliburton will get the contract to rebuild and only cost the Feds 250 million instead of the 125 million projected!
