Who Should Obama and McCain Pick for VP, and Why?

Well the title says it all, almost. Lets hold back the Attacks if possible and lets see who picks who. I think that Obama may look to the GOP for a VP or at least have someone from the GOP on his short list.

As for McCain I think the short list will be who wants to run with him! That is if McCain is the Republican Nominee. I expect he will have to bow out at the last minute due to a "Sudden Health Situation" that will be kept private. Any thoughts on that scenario??

Sorry if you mistook that statement as an Attack, it was really meant as a serious question. There is no talk of his possible VP pick in the News to speak of. So who do you think will be his VP pick? And why?

The most likely GOP pick for Obama is Hagel. The field is wide open for him otherwise, but he'll have to stay clear of Democratic Senators from purple states.

For McCain, he needs somebody relatively young and vibrant. That would be everyone except Wilford Brimley. I suggest Chuck Norris.

The problem for Obama, is he needs to find someone who brings voters to the Democratic ticket - while he is already holding a huge lead over McCain. So who does he choose?

Military men like Gen. James Jones, or Gen. Wesley Clark (also a Roman Catholic) or Sen. Jim Webb
Other Roman Catholics - Gov.s Sebellius - KS, Schweitzer - MT, or Sen. Joe Biden, Gov Richardson - NM
Swing Staters - Which I don't think help ultimately - rarely do they help with their own state - Sen.s Ben Nelson -NE, Bill Nelson- FL, Gov Ritter - CO, Sen. Bayh - IN.
People who piss off the GOP - Al Gore, Hillary, Oprah, and anyone from Hollywood
Women - Gov.s Sebellius, Napolitano, Sen. Hillary, Chris Gregoire - WA, Gov. Ruth Ann Minner - DE, or Sen. Feinstein - CA

I think Obama leans to another centrist, but someone who appeals to a group, like military folks or Roman Catholics. I think Gen Jones is much less partisan than Clark, and so is Gov. Sebellius - being she is a converted Republican.

The problem for McCain is running and losing as the VEEP is the end of your political career. Anyone under the age of 65 and with any hope of a continuing career won't want it, and does McCain want a running mate with the same age issue he has? Can you run a national campaign on a 4 day work week, looking like Cocoon 2?

Really Old white guys w/ dead careers- Dick Cheney, Don Rumsfeld, ex- VP Quayle, ex- Congressman Jack Kemp, Sen Zell Miller - CSA, Sen Joe Liebermann - Ct4L, Fred Thompson
Old white guys w/ dead careers Jeb Bush, Joe Scarborough, Tony Blankley, Ron Paul, Rudi Ghouliani, Mittens Romney, Mike Hucklebee
Not White guys - Colin Powell, Alan Keyes
Not white women - Condi Rice
White women - Libby Dole

On McCain's whole list, none of them have any political future, and none have any credibility left. Except for Scarborough, none have any real charisma either. McCain needs someone who is willing to take one for the team, good luck. I think he'll wind up going with Romney. On the list, he's the one who can compete in a Blue state, and he'll be a barrier breaker, the first LDS national candidate. Plus, most of the rest of the list are on McCain's enemy list - if he had to spend 4 months campaigning with Huckabee, I'm sure McCain would wind up killing him. Same for Ron Paul, heck the whole list except maybe Kemp and Romney.

It is a serious question. The one fop hanging off McCain's shoulder in any picture is Joe Leibermann. He positively drools at being on the ticket.

Obama is running as a rejection of the politics of the past - a new way forward, with Hope and Change. Hagel is a part of the politics of division. The great thing about Obama is he can pick anyone from outside Washington, even if they're partisan hacks, and still come off OK. Gov. Sebellius, a reformed Repug is nice for this reason. As is Gov. Janet, a non-partisan, former US Atty, and former State AG. Gov Schwietzer is another outsider, no National baggage, very popular Red State, progressive, liberal Democrat.

But after todays attempt to reach out to Evangelicals:

ZANESVILLE, Ohio - Taking a page from President Bush, Democrat Barack Obama said Tuesday he wants to expand White House efforts to steer social service dollars to religious groups, risking protests in his own party with his latest aggressive reach for voters who usually vote Republican.

I never had Wesley Clark on the short list for VP anyway. It's a waste of talent. Sec. of Defense would be better suited to a 5-Star General with real management experience.

As for backing faith-based initiatives, Obama has revealed his biggest strength and his biggest weakness -- an all too willing ability to compromise with his political opponents in the name of unity. Of course, all politicians tack to the center in the general election, to optimize mass-appeal. But faith-based initiatives don't even belong in the center. Public money shouldn't fund church activities, period. If that sounds inflexible, it should. We wouldn't want to see our taxes fund Jewish or Muslim charities either.

This coming from Obama the constitutional scholar surprises me. This coming from Obama the politician doesn't surprise me so much.

I saw an article citing unnamed R's and D's, all floating Speaker Gephardt. I like it, but he's an overall 7. BUT for his constituency - blue collar, Union workers, and Whites ages 40 to 70, Gephardt is a 10. I think he could bring alot of votes from that demographic, and cement the Rust Belt states - IN, OH, PA, MO, MI, WI - into Obama's column.
