That Sheriff Joe Arpaio! What a guy! He made Lou Dobbs this afternoon. Seems he has his posse out in the desert hunting illegal aliens. He arrests them and jails them – no catch and release.
What a guy! His message to the coyotes and their human contraband is “Don’t even think about coming into Maricopa County!”
The State catches the Coyotes and prosecutes them for smuggling, but catches and releases their human contraband. Joe takes the position that the illegal aliens are accomplices and jails them accordingly.
What a guy! He bristles at the comparison of his posse of 3200 volunteer citizens to the Minutemen. He says posse members go through extensive training and are sworn under the Arizona Constitution. That seems pretty thorough and legal to me.
I am conflicted. I have been against this guy for his heavy handed methods and his apparent disregard for civil, let alone human, rights. But on this issue he is showing the same dedication that he normally puts into his job, and we are on the same side for once.
I could never understand his very high popularity ratings with the electorate. Suddenly I am seeing how that might be. In fact it even occurs to me to report for duty, or at least investigate it.
On this issue all I can say is this is Sheriff Joe Mojo. Go Joe.

| The subject of backlash has surface eslewhere in the comments here at VofA. I would consider this action by Sheriff Joe to be a semi-official backlash. But the true backlash is surfacing across America: ______________________________________________________ Va. Voters Oust Immigrant Work Area Backers The Associated Press Wednesday, May 3, 2006; 10:05 PM "HERNDON, Va. -- Voters unseated the mayor and two Town Council members who supported creating a center where immigrant laborers could seek work in this fast-growing suburb of the nation's capital. "In a contest that some considered a mini-referendum on illegal immigration, voters Tuesday replaced all but one incumbent with challengers who immediately called for changes at the center, including prohibiting it from spending public money and allowing only legal immigrants to use it." ______________________________________________________ Read it compelete at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/03/AR2006050301607.html Notice that as usual the Fourth Estate does not make an explicit and clear distinction between illegal aliens and legal immigrants/workers, except by inference in the last line above. The voters were making it clear that they were against supporting the illegal aliens, not against supporting the center for legal immigrants/workers. May the backlash grow and snap our "leaders" out of their catatonic state! |

| Mr. Moderate, Although we on this board often disagree, I find the current agreement a refreshing confirmation of our unity as Americans. Who would have thought a man such as Sheriff Joe, an often accused neocon, could symbolize our stance of single purpose; protecting America. My hat is off to all my fellow board readers/writers... | On the downside of Sheriff average joe . . . After I moved here I quickly noticed what I thought was this guy mugging for the camera. I thought maybe he might be positioning for a run at President or something? It just seemed to me that any evening news worthy issue and magically he appears! "LOOK AT ME ... LOOK AT ME". I just wish when he acted in our behalf it seemed more genuine and less about hogging my T.V. set. Just an ancillary and outsider view of Arizona law enforcment. Also, I moved here from Tennessee (another right to work state), and the only other state where I have witnesses CHAIN GANGS! In Tennessee they are seemingly almost all african Americans on the chain . . . At least here sheriff Joe has whites, browns and others slaving in the desert sun!

| Good article, AZ Moderate! I share your feeling of being conflicted by means, ends and context. Why does a befitting 19th century solution have to come from an 19th man? Congratulations on getting over the 700 hump with a meanigful article! |

| Watch your back Sheriff Joe! Your posse may be under observation by the border patrol. You might want to keep an eye on the Mexican government’s web sites to see how you are doing (or not doing). | I am not too conflicted about grandstanding Sheriff Joe. There's a Texas saying the goes: Fool me once, shame on . . . No, wrong saying. There's another saying that goes: Even a dead watch is correct twice a day. Tough on crime - yeah, I like that. Don't pamper our prison population with tax payer's money - of course. Get tough on enforcing our borders - no problem here. But beyond this, and I take serious issue with the man. Sheriff Joe lightly dismisses the civil rights, and as you say AZ Mod, the human rights of his prisoners; justifying his heavy-handed rules by reminding us that the detainees and convicts are not sacrificing like our GIs. Of course, he's been charging them for bologna sandwiches, housing them in tents midsummer, and forcing men and women into chaingangs well before our soldiers came to Afghanistan or Iraq. But what is really inhumane is the inmate forced viewing of a Newt Gingrich lecture series in his jails. When asked why he doesn't have a mandatory policy for watching a democratic lecture series for balance, he said that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place. Where will this stop? Today Newt Gingrich, tomorrow Sean Hannity. The horror!!! O.K. so maybe these transgressions are seemingly minor. After all, these are criminals and they have forfeited some of their rights when they broke the law. But it is just this kind of arrogant manipulation of power that can be turned against everyday citizens if we're not careful. Witness the wiretapping of U.S. citizens without warrant, justified by claiming if you are not guilty, you have nothing to fear. Or the embracing of abstinence only birth control policy, mandatorily taught in our public schools and counseled in our planned parenthood clinics. Or strictly faith-based treatments for substance abuse (and I'll wager that it'll be Jesus and not Moses helping you through the DTs). Arpaio is an elected official, and he, like Bush, ignores the Constitution when it suits him. I would be equally disapproving of him if he were a Democrat and pulling the same (publicity) stunts. I don't need my county Sheriff on Lou Dobbs, I need him doing his job here and upholding the law as it applies to everyone - inside and outside his jails. |

Digg It!

Then I heard and please correct me if I'm wrong, he employs many of his family members to prepare foods and do other jobs for his prison. Now, is Sheriff Joe taking advantage of his authority, probably. If anyone knows the answer regarding nepotism, please inform.
Jumping on the illegal alien bandwagon, why not, it got him a gig on Lou Dobbs.
