Picacho Peak has always been a landmark for tribes, early explorers, pioneers and modern day travelers. In 1846, the Mormon Battalion, on their way to California to fight in the war with Mexico, constructed a wagon road through Picacho Pass. The Peak was also the site of the westernmost battle of the Civil War. On April 15, 1862, a detachment of Union soldiers from California attacked a Confederate scouting party. The battle lasted for one-to-two hours and three Union soldiers were killed. Every spring, “The Civil War in the Southwest” is re-enacted at Picacho Peak, including military camps and living history demonstrations.
