The results of a USA Today/Gallup poll, conducted over the weekend, shows, “Those surveyed oppose the idea of increased troop levels by 61%-36%. Approval of the job Bush is doing in Iraq has sunk to 26%, a record low.”
Let’s wait and see what Bush‘s new strategy is? I don’t know about you, but after four years, I have no patience left and Bush’s prepared aside of last week - that he’s putting the finishing touches on his “new strategy” - only rankles.
Benchmarks, schmenchmarks! Job opportunities for Iraqis? Humbuggery!
From my vantage point, there are several options for Bush to choose from:
1. Cut and leave, attempt to exit gracefully.
2. Stay the course.
3. Tinker with the current strategy and be patient.
4. Change the drapes - send more troops.
The USA Today poll shows the nation has no more patience than I, so the second and third option can be eliminated. That means Bush must change the dynamic - get outta the house or change the drapes.
Like the man said, “Ya don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows” and the wind’s in Bush’s face! It’ll make hanging drapes pretty difficult but there’s no way Congress or Laura or Barney or his Daddy can stop him if he’s committed to redecorating.
On the other hand, President Bush can surprise us all. Tomorrow, he can establish the goal of disengagement and redeployment. He can save face by saying he’s really staying the course - he’s heard his generals, from the departing Casey on the ground to Abezaid in the Pentagon, he can say he’s listened to the Joint Chiefs! To cap it, he can say he’s heard and understands the wishes of we, the people!
Planet Earth would rock with applause and a collective sigh of relief!
Yet, I suspect the President’s spent more than two months now poring over the color charts. It’s hard, real hard, ya know. Will it be oxblood, gan-green or crepe black? No matter really, they’ll all keep out the sunshine and Planet Earth will still rock!
