It amazes me that in today's work place "Work Ethic" has been lost. It used to be that people took pride in their daily tasks and strived to be the best. Not just for themselves but the feeling of pride when they came home to their families knowing they were setting a good example. It felt good to come home from a hard days work and rest their head on the pillow and know that they earned every penny they made. The customer used to feel a genuine level of customer service.

Today, people go to work for a paycheck without regard to whether they did their job well or not. The mentality is "Employers pay people just enough not to quit and employees work just enough not to get fired". You see it everywhere you go. Whether it's fast food or the corporate world. Not only have people become just down right lazy but the expectations of the employee have been fogged by claims of racism and the lazy ways of today's society. It's easier to let an employee get away with poor customer service than address the problem in fear the employee might claim, It's because their a female or their black. It's the mentality of "I'll do what I have to without getting fired" for the employee and as for the supervisors, they just don't want any problems.

I put alot of the blame on the supervisors in today's work place. Since when has it been acceptable to do less than your best? If an employee is late... bring it to their attention. If an employee lacks in customer service... give them more training. If an employee is not willing to do their job with pride... FIRE THEM!  If we continue to allow employees to do a half ass job, it's on our shoulders at the end of the day. That makes the supervisor the problem and not the employee. The supervisor is doing a half ass job if they don't expect and enforce the best out of their employees.  What ever happend to the concept of "Lead by example"??

As a supervisor, I have always had the belief that I am only as strong as my team. I believe in giving the employee all the tools they need to perform their job to the highest of expectations. If they fail, that's because they did not give it their all, not because I didn't give them the tools. Unfortunately in today's work place people are affraid of making employees accountable. It's easier to do the job themselves than teach their employees to take pride in their work.

I encourage everyone that is reading this article to go to work tommorow and give it your all. Lead by example and expect the best of everyone around you. One person can not change their work place but if you encourage the people around you to do better, only good things can come of it. Compliments are free but can make a world of difference to an employee who doesn't feel appreciated for doing a great job. If you're a supervisor, give your strong employees a pat on the back for a job well done. If you have weak employees, give them the tools to become the best. If you see a routine problem, address it!

I refuse to let work ethic die just because people won't expect the best. The customer does... Why shouldn't the employee?
