Article Image for: Was that Conservatism I saw flicker for a moment? Many of you will disagree with this but you are not Conservatives so you are at a loss for what conservative people are hoping for in this election.

This week Conservatives saw a brief glimmer of hope for the conservative movement, not to be confused with Republicans. During a debate real solid conservatism raised its head and stood head and shoulders above the current blah blah blah from the republicans running for the White House.

For us, it was a return to reality, a refresher that the conservative platform just makes sense. It brings forth positive emotions based in solid principals and not just good feelings for the sake of feeling good. Emotion is a fact of life and a major factor in the voting process for both sides of the aisle.

It was amazing to hear these text book conservative values coming from one of the GOP hopefuls because we, conservative, have not heard much that jives with the platform we all know and believe in. Too often the we have heard what seems like an attempted redefinition of conservative values by the candidates.

Guiliani is pro gay marriage and pro over-reaching gun control.  While still in favor of lower taxes, it is a trade off many can not stomach. Romney likewise has flip flopped on abortion, a pretty clear conservative plank. Huckabee seems soft on crime and was in favor of over a half billion dollars in tax increases as Governor of Arkansas. Then there is the so called Golden Boy of the moment, McCain. McCain was the first sitting Senator to launch a full frontal assault on the Constitutions Bill of Rights with his so called removal of money from the political system, which for all intent and purpose helped squelch the first amendment.

It is perhaps because of these twisted understandings of what conservatism is that many true conservative adherents found almost instant entente cordiale with their new champion. The who was far less important that the what in this case.

It was Fred Thompson who showed the first true conservative flicker. With all the talk of the others in the race overtaking and overshadowing Thompson in recent weeks, especially following what many thought was a wasted shot in the dark when he first announced and then his campaign appeared to loss steam, was thought to be almost an afterthought in the GOP race.

I will tell you this now, with a voting record not entirely devoid of questions, he is the best hope for the movement. Not for the GOP, but for Conservatism.

But what would I know; I'm just the quintessential Conservative Average American.
