The article from which I found this is on Huffpo includes the video of the ambassador who made the original comments.
There is a second one as well, that contains the sermon from which the phrase "God Damn America" was cut and you can view that on my blog (when I can figure out how to imbed more than one video at a time with this system, in future articles, I will do so).

| I don't want to sound gleeful, but "context" won't salvage Obama's campaign from the damage done by these clips being played repeatedly on the radio and TV for the last three weeks. Obama tried to quickly and, in my opinion, sneakily condemn Wright's statements in his issue-dodging speech and moved the issue beyond Wright and into a discussion on racism. I thought it was a huge political miscalculation. Americans, especially the blue-collar white Democrats in Pennsylvania that are now flocking to Hillary, wanted to hear Obama say that Wright and his comments were to be condemned and that people like him have no place in his campaign. Instead his message of "understanding" was interpreted as justifying Wright's comments by blaming white people. Like it or not, that was the result of the speech. Wright's latest racist statements don't help either and Obama's enduring relationship with the reverend is making a mockery his "come together" campaign and he will suffer for it in Pennsylvania and in the November election. Will "context" help Obama? My answer no. Obama already condemned Wrights comments and the only context he referred to was historical context regarding slavery, civil rights, etc. Nowhere in Obama's speech did he identify the context of Wright's comments, such as that the "chickens coming home to roost" line coming from an editorial. Moreover, Obama scolded the media for picking and choosing a few clips out of Wright's 30-year career; I don't recall any mention of what was said several minutes before the offensive comments. The damage is done and Obama has a credibility problem. These are the stupid surprises that I was talking about. The two Democratic candidates are twisting in the wind and their suits of armor are made of cotton. Yes, that's the best line I could come up with. |

*** Uh, he was in front of a gaggle of reporters, at a lectern, how freaking sneaky can it be? And, unless you are incapable of reading polls, the blue collar, white Dems weren't Obama's base of support. That is Clinton's base. So they aren't flocking to Hillary, they aren't leaving Clinton like younger voters, middle age women, college educated voters, and blacks. Also, Obama condemned the comments, but refused to reject the man. Toad, if every man you've met in your life who has said a stupid, racist, anti semitic or mysogynistic comment were to be cast out of America, I'm betting this place would get real empty, real fast. *** Toad, here is reality check for you, mmm-okay. People who aren't voting for the uppity negro weren't voting for Obama, ever. But they also weren't voting for Hillary. They voted for Bush, Dole, Bush, Reagan, Ford and Nixon. After the Civil Rights movement, and the voting rights act, and Civil rights act, the South went from a solid Democratic stronghold, to a solid Republican stronghold. Those redneck voters will not vote for any Democratic candidate, ever. Don't you get that? It isn't like Bobby Ray is going to wake up, walk past his wall sized Stars and Bars, on his way to the can, go in shower, shave, and proudly rub his KKK tattoo, and head down to the local Cliton campaign headqurters to support the pro affirmative action woman candidate. The math does not help Hillary; she needs 2/3rds of the remaining delegates. Along the way, she has derided and disparaged every state that holds caucuses, all red states w/ their stupid Dem voters, black voters, young voters, latte liberals, and liberals generally. The vast majority of Super Delegates probably fit in one of these catergories. You've got Nancy Pelosi, and most of the remaining Big Shot uncommited Super Delegates starting to call for the campaign to be over. Hillary has not had the delegate lead for one day of the race. She has a 48% negative rating nationally, and it is over 60% with independents, and 75% with Republicans. Who is going to cross over and vote for more of Bill and Hillary, among the voters who have spent $100's of dollars buying anti Clinton books, listened to 10's of 1000's of hours of Rush, and go to gun shows and buy shooting targets with Hillary's face printed on them? I don't think you understand how deep and wide the anti Clinton propaghanda runs, and how effective it has been. When my Prescott, hippy friends get together, I'd say it runs 3 to 1 who hate Hillarys guts. And this is among liberal Democratic and Green party peeps. |

In that case, he can join Hillary Clinton and John McCain on a level playing field. Since when did a credibility problem ever stop a politician? The Rev. Wright issue hurt Obama in the short run. Then he came back with a widely well-received speech on the broader topic of racial issues in America. Rev. Wright irrelevant oratory is falling of the media's radar, but the boldness and authenticity of Obama's more relevant speech remain. The long range result will be a big positive for Obama, and McCain would be wise to stay clear of racial identity politics if he goes mano a mano with Obama. I have no crystal ball, but I suspect that John McCain's old age and general cluelessness about the economy and the nature of the conflict in Iran/Iraq will be his downfall no matter who he runs against. If you accept that JFK defeated Nixon largely on the basis of a televised debate showing a young charismatic man standing next to a balding perspiring old stooge, then you ain't seen nothing like the visual disconnect that Americans at large will be exposed to when seeing Obama or Clinton facing down confused and grumpy McCain. I'm not saying this is the right way to get the measure of the next President, but it undeniably will be a powerful factor once the final contest has begun. McCain's current high is not because he is saying and doing the right things, but because no one is paying attention. He has bet his future on the surge, and as events continue to play out in Iraq, that probably wasn't a good idea. Add to that the worsening economic news, and his pledge to do nothing about it but continue the economic policies of Bush, and the fact that he has proclaimed his general ignorance on economic matters, and you have yourself one pitifully prepared man for the November election. Once the spotlight is on him again, all his faults will come center stage. I honestly think that Clinton can beat McCain handily. I also honestly believe that Obama will defeat McCain in a landslide. Will John McCain learn that this is No Country for Old Men? Depends (diapers, that is). |
