Tonight’s show was one for the books. We had a number of new callers who will hopefully make their way here to our home away from home and become members who will comment and give us some new and exciting topics to discuss.

Debbie of Phoenix’s article on the Dream Act was certainly case for some lively discussion. The local legend Mr. John Dale gave the show some mention as I unknowingly covered a subject that he had planned in some part to cover tonight, illegal immigration. The callers tonight were new, different and unique most coming from outside of the site. This is a good deal for all of us as snarling at each other can ge a bit redundant at times.

But to the direct mention of Debbie’s Dream Article it was brought up by a caller named Jim that we often times hear the argument that the illegal aliens are hard working people, pay taxes and are here only for the betterment of their children and themselves. While this may all be true, those making the argument tend to pass over the main topic which should be their status as illegal. While there is surely a majority of these illegal aliens that are just that, hard working, tax paying (although to a fictitious or stolen SS number) with only the best for their family in mind, they are in fact illegal in this country. Debbie’s Dream Act support should really be called the Legal Dream Act.

In her article she recounts the story of a girl with good grades, a solid history of community service and a desire to achieve, but she negates the fact that her status as an illegal was decided for her not by the United States or its citizens, but by her parents who brought her here illegally to begin with. We are not responsible for her status. Had her parents simply waited to jump the fence before having her, her status would have been quite different.

It is not unlike the kid with the straight A’s good record of community service and a desire to achieve whose mother is on crack. What happens to the child when mom gets caught? Well, he or she is taken by CPS, moved to relatives of placed in foster care. This is a perfectly legitimate reaction to an illegal child in this country. Move them to CPS, and allow for a hearing on citizenship to be arranged if the child is old enough to desire to stay, or as in the case of Elian Gonzales of Janet Reno fame, return them to their country of origin with a family member who will take the responsibility.

Either way when we talk about Illegal children in this country, it was their parents who placed on them their status as illegal, not us. If these people truly wanted what was best they would have come here in the legal fashion, or at the very least, waited to have a child until they got here. That way the child would be an American without any debate about it.

A last thought here. I suggested that upon the discovery of a family’s illegal status the parents should be returned to their country of origin. Recently the federal courts agreed with me stating that the hardship on the family members was not enough of a reason to flaunt the law as written. So we are left with only one question; when will our government get serious about border control? Unfortunately they are still knee deep in the debate about what is and what is not amnesty.

If they are allowed to stay and “get in line” for citizenship, no matter how you say it, describe it or call it, it is amnesty. Whether they have to pay a fine or not it is amnesty.

Unless we make them return home with the knowledge that citizenship in this country will be denied for a period of time, and that only after that period of time may they attempt to re-file for a change of status, it is amnesty.

But what would I know; I’m just an Average American.
