The true Toll on the American Taxpayer is our own misguided nationalism.
While we focus our attention on symptoms of the ills of the wolrd, we
are bleedijng profusely froma dozen or more more gaping wounds.
J.W. SHELTON aka THE PATRIOT's innacurate post is worthy of a seperate thread. He posted an article that appeared to get some praise from a few. Yet he refused to back it up with fact. This double-speak is the very basis that the Nazis and other fascist regimes use distort the truth in support of the preservation of the regime. While Mr Shelton's oft posted disdain for any party politics is admirable, he is so far immersed in the "bandwagon", he doesn't even realize he is beating thier drums.
Like I said, Mr. So-called Patriot. Back it up. Show me the article regarding the misleading statistics and misinformation that was supposedly printed by the LA Times. Better yet, cite the resources. Had the LA Times posted it, I am sure they would have cited their sources.
I have searched for your article repeatedly and not found it. Its not to say that its not there. Its just to say that a repeated search has only brought up an over-used, under-cited internet spammed email which goes to show that you cannot even formulate an original thought, much less steal one backed up by fact. If it were printed in the LA Times, it was probably to disclaim that it was first published by the LA times. (First attributed back in 2002)Ny guess is some other moron posted it on a blog, citing it as fact, and you simply a$$ummed it was. Put your money where your mouth is. Produce the article. Cite the facts.
I did, however find this: http://www.snopes.com/politics/immigration/taxes.asp.
An excellent essay on how the facts are misleading, misinterpreted, or downright false.
I don't know what the statistics are. Frankly, I don't care. I already know that the economic refugee problem in the U.S. is not NEARLY as big a problem as the so many other problems we have in this country. I already know that the rallying call to blame a class of people for all of our country's problems is not just wrong, illogical, and baseless, but its so disturbngly nationalistic that it strikingly resembles Nazi Germany in the 30's. I already know that in my gut, blaming the brown-skinned from the south for our ills is like blaming Iraq for 9-11.
Misguided. And wrong.
When will we realize that isolationism doesn't work? Its like burying our head in the sand! This is not just an immigration problem. The solution lies NOT in how to blockade ourselves offf from the world and excpect to live independently of that happily ever after. The solution lies in cooperation and working in ways that will assist the developing nations of this hemispehere and in ways to increase and develop their infrastructures, not just force-feed them American-bred poisoned democracy.
And it never ceases to amaze me how many times I hear that other over-used, unoriginal comment you made to me in your post: "Why not you start the process by moving you a$$ to Mexico." First of all, I wouldn't mind it. I've considered it often. I have travelled to Mexico innumerable times. (Have you? Other than the "border-towns"?) Most Americans have this distorted sense that Mexico is some dirty third-world country filled with criminals and starving babies. Mexico City is the largest city in the world! Being as Mexico is the fourth largest economy in the world, and growing faster than most (the only economy to have a 40-year boom in growth even during world-wide depression) and filled with rich culture, rich resources, and some of the nicest people I have ever, and probably will ever, meet....I wouldn't mind moving there one bit and consider it often.
The bigotry and racism there is one tenth what it is here.
Is this to say that so-called "illegal immigration" isn't a problem? Of course not. But we aren't even asking the right questions. Like I said in my comment to your unoriginal, sheep-following-the-herd post on immigration:
US foriegn policy has ALWAYS come back to bite us in the ass...installing Hussein...installing Osama. Its always been about money. It has never been about what is right. Just about what the rich think is good for them Right Now.
The long term goal/question should be, "How can we assist in the development of Mexico's economy so there is no need for economic refugees to seek asylum?" And if you are a greedy-assed republican, go ahead and tack on to the end of that question: "...and make bundles of money in the process?" The question should NOT be, "How can we build a bigger fence?"
When the hell are we going to realize that alienating and pissing off the rest of the hemisphere, and extreme nationalism will NEVER work.
Has anyone else noticed that white folk and US citzens are a minority in this hemisphere? Have a little compassion and respect. It goes a long way.
THE NOT SO TRUE toll on American Taxpayer

Why do you always talk about white people. Are you some kind of racist or what? I guesss I have never seen a black congressman(jefferson) stealing like a greedy jack ass from the American people! Ohh and I Guess I have never seen a black dictator (Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe) bulldoze over his citezens while they live in filth and he lives in a 23 bathroom mansion.

I guesss I have never seen a black congressman(jefferson) stealing like a greedy jack ass from the American people! Slow down J-dub, your sheet is showing; try a little perspective. Jefferson took a $100,000 bribe, for which he was going to provide a payback. Tom DeLay and Jack Abramoff ran a multi million dollar bribery, racketeering, election stealing operation including fake charities, one of which was to provide summer camp oportunities to young poor kids. 96% of the millions of dollars given to that charity wound up in Tom DeLay's wife's retirement fund! And they're all white people! Probably not a good idea to indict an entire race based on an individuals actions. And crosshatch was not smearing whites, he was pointing out that whites are a minority in the Western hemisphere.

I never expected you to understand because it requires something that you seem to have no understanding of. Compassion. The idea that we are ALL human beings and need to survive in this world, should, in iteself be a good enough reason to be assistive and cooperative with others in this world. Even more so the countries that are our neighbors. On top of that, some might call it good christian behavior. Others might call it being a good human being. But I expected you to be the first to comment and the first to not get it. I don't HAVE to do anything in this world. But I know that my one and only true purpose in this world is to be as helpful a human being to my fellows as I can possibly be. I find that being MORE giving and generous rewards me in more ways than I could ever have dreamed. I want to be assistive. Not out of obligation. But because I want to. Why do you NOT want to? "We all know why they come here but that's no excuse or give them the right to violate our sovern laws.> I suppose we never even need to ask any more questions. You have all the answers and can speak for everyone. "Your argument is ridiculous and you should be hung. Hung is another term for being ejected from the site for stupidity." Just another perfect example of double-speak. I guess you feel a need to rewrite definitions, as well. You find my argument ridiculous only because it doesn't follow YOUR logic. I may not have been here for very long but it seems real clear that you rail on anything or anyone that doesn't follow your own twisted logic. The problem with relying on 'logic' alone is that you allow no room for the rest of what makes us human. Spirit. Compassion. Tolerance. Respect. Love. God. For this, I actually pity you.

All right maybe I have been a little ruff but that's only because our government is trying to force an Amnesty bill down my throat. I am no different in person. I agree I am not good with authority or laws. That's what angers me the most is because they pick and choose which laws they want to enforce. I don't see it that way. If your not going to be enforce a law then the law becomes a tool enforced when it's convenient to the government and turns out to be is just another way to maintain control over us. It's not our fault they came here illegal. They knew what they were doing all along and if it hurts some people...well they had it coming. I don't believe I've touched a hot stove since I was a kid because I know the outcome. You have to understand that America is generous..more generous that all nations.. Why do I then have to accept people from a Nation illegally that is rich in resources but ran by a corrupt dictator... It's not our fault they have no balls..Their people should rise up like we did and demand change. I feel we are doing the Mexican citizens a disservice by accepting them. They will never rise up if we keep pandering to them and that's what the Mexican President wants... We don't see millions of people starving in the streets of Mexico. If that was the case then I could see helping. otherwise you are contributing to their plight.. Hell, America probably has more people go hungry at night!! oh, and I didn't mean to rhyme...lol

JW I am always willing to meet part way. I think that is what it all comes down to. I appreciate what you have to ssay and your last comment. I have never advocated "just open up the floodgates". And I know that the illegal immigration is a problem. I just tend to think that blaming and punishing those that are starving and doing anything they can to save their families is necessarily the right approach. Should there be enforcement? Absolutely. But I tend to think the majority of uneducated Americans tend to think that we need bigger fences, more guns and metaphoically shoot at will. And I find that disturbing. I also think it would never solve anything. It would be like putting a bandaid on a severed limb. I have never claimed to have the answers. I know a lot about some things. Three college degrees. Plenty of education and life experience. But frankly I know diddly about much of the meanderings of geopolitical politics. I'll be the first to admit that. But I DO rely more on what I believe to be right or wrong rather than what may or may not seem to fit logically. Do you be honest and tell your friend that that she looks fat in those clothes when she asks? Or do you suggest that something else might look better? Honesty id the best policy, right? Policy and standards and tradition are NOT always the best determinants of what our next action should be. Sometimes we absolutely need to rely on a spirit of right and wrong. Mexico is a developing nation. Not a "Third World Country" as so many like to think of it. These people are no different than us. How many centuries did it take to many people to rise up against their oppressors. Actually, most Mexicans crossing the border are from the southern regions. Many more are not even from mexico at all, but rather pass through from Guatamala and even poorer countries. Many ARE starving in southern Mexico...the indians. I know so many people in and from Mexico. Even some here illegally. One in particular came here to be with a loved one after numerous failed attempts to get a visa. He wants nothing more than to work, be happy, legal and with his loved one. Do we just classify him as a criminal, through him in Goldwater's labor camp, and throw away the key? Or others similar? The one's starving could care less if we throw them in jail. So these tactics will never work. The only thing that would work would be a solution that involves BOTH nations cooperating. Mexico has no real motivation to relieve this problem. Give them some. Why is it that we trade more with China than Mexico? The goods are not cheaper to import. But the profit is higher. Corporate America will do whatever it takes to make more profit. Regardless of what it does to our own workers or economy. So long as they survive and prospoer, they don't care. Investing and finding ways to benefit our neighbors and ourselves can ONLY be good for both of us, and our economy. Mexico's ideals and principles of government have always been close to our own. It is, unfortuanely fraught with corruption. As are we..... As far as I know, Vincente Fix was elected. Well...in so much as Resident Bush was...twice. It is prudent to look for what we have in common just as much as we have differences.

JW said something that could easily spawn a lengthy debate all its own: "America is generous..more generous that all nations.." Does everyone agree with this?

del.icio.us
Digg It!

Furthermore, why on Gods earth should I assist in the development of ANY "Sovern" nations economy and/or Government unless I want to?
I don't have a duty to fix everyone's Government in order to keep them out of my house.
Do I have to personally pay for a meth addict's drug rehab in order to keep him from stealing items from my house.
The answer is NO. Now, if (I) choose to help the man I will otherwise he better get the hell out of my house.
We all know why they come here but that's no excuse or give them the right to violate our sovern laws.
Name one country you can go and just walk in and set up shop with out any regard to the citezens or their laws...Only 1 America.
Your argument is ridiculous and you should be hung.
Hung is another term for being ejected from the site for stupidity.
