A question came up at work and the sports experts did not know the answer, not for sure, even those who, well, you know the type, they seem to know it all, or think they do . . . they know more stats than I do . . . why I don't post much here on sports . . . but looks like not too many do . . . so I throw this out for comment, or "Reply Post:"
Has any professional team in a major sport, let's say, in U. S., in Big Four (Baseball, Football, Basketball, Hockey) ever had a losing regular season record . . . and won the championship that same season?
It is mathematically possible in at least some sports . . . it came up as a friend who is a St. Louis Cardinals fan mentioned that they were, he said, I did not check it, 82-80 last year and won the WS.
So I thought about baseball, there is I think one division with only four teams in it . . so if they all sucked fairly evenly, and got beat in Interleague play, you could have a team with a losing record in the playoffs . . .
But I don't know the other sports, if that is allowed, possible, or has it happened?
Just, perhaps, an interesting question for sports fans out there. . . . and for me, a brief respite from the usual "heavy-handed" stuff I read and sometimes write.
Comment or post the story if this has happened??
and . . . Write on.
