Colin Powell just endorsed the Barak Obama – 'Joe the Biden' ticket. His rationale was all American, and his delivery was right on target.
Here is a Republican of exceptional accomplishment that truly puts “Country First”, the slogan but not the action of the McCain Campaign.
As I watched his announcement and his reasons for it on Meet the Press this Morning, I wondered where a man like this might go politically.
Colin Powell is a Conservative Republican of the old school. And while he is a good friend of John McCain, Colin has come to the conclusion that the Republican Party has moved too far to the right, and that is not good for his, and my, country.
I have been unable to find a true “Country First” agenda in either of the two major parties, or any of the also-rans as far as that goes. Colin Powell is a political soul mate on that point. There is no party whose basic tenants match mine. The best fit for me at this point, and not a very good fit at that, is the Democratic Party.
It would appear that a majority of Americans are in that same boat. The number of registered Independents is greater than either party's registered voters, so I understand. And I suspect there are more than a few like myself and Colin Powell that are not happy with the trajectory of the Democratic Party or the Republican Party.
My Prediction
I predict that the dissatisfaction with the mismatch between the 'profile of values' the majority of Americans hold and the tenants of any current party is very close to reaching critical mass. When, not if, it does, expect to see a new American Moderate Party emerge and grow strong, a party for which the base is the great unrepresented Moderate American, the real “Average American”.
The Moderate American Party will draw its strength largely from Independents, Conservative Democrats and Liberal Conservatives. While it will be moderate and inclusive, there will be a moderately conservative (in terms of safeguarding our precious Constitution) slant to its set of basic tenants, with room for consideration of both ends of the spectrum, held down on the left by some currently registered Green Party members, and on the right by some currently registered Libertarian members.
The Democratic Party and Republican Party will retreat to their precious special interest bases and struggle for existence. They will be side-cars to the new America, side-cars full of zealots, radicals and extremists of the Communist and the Fascist persuasion respectively. They will survive a period of disintegration, and then become more cohesive and gain strength as the Average American forgets the lessons of the Bu$hite coup, but henceforth and forthwith they will have to compete with the Average American by then firmly enfranchised by the American Moderate Party.

Colin Powell mentioned Sister Sarah in passing, and was of the opinion that she was evidence of the continuing rightward lurch of his party toward the religious extreme.
