Congressman Charles Rangel wants to introduce a bill into the congress to reinstate the conscription of young people into the military service when the Democrats take over as the majority in the government houses next year.  As opposed to war as I am, I agreee with him on this point.  Seriously.

I understand that this drastic measure actually has an underlying reason.  And that reason I belive is to debate why the administration went to war.  I understand that he, as well as most Americans want to know why we invaded and occupied a soverign nation that was no threat to us.  Exactly what was the REAL motive, so that we will know what accomplisment of the mission looks like.  I think Mr Rangel wants to bring out the fact that the volunteer military services we have now are "over represented" by the poor, and those who find limited oppurtunities in thier home towns because there are no jobs or education is limited by thier income.  I do belive that Mr. Rangel knows that his bill has no chance of passage, but he hopes that it comes to the parlimentary floor for enlightening and vibrant debate.

But...I agree with the bill itself.  To me, if we had conscription here, there would always be a well trained, fully armed and ready to go military to take on, and take care of any threat.  Remember, we supposedly live in a world where the terrorists will be around for a long time, and to me, well trained eyes and ears walking the streets in our country is better than any, and all the money we spend on frivilous measures that "target" certian people for scrutany more than others, and protect some points of entry and not others.

Why not conscript young people, train them in a military way, then assign them to guard ports of entry.  I can see our young men and women trained to support the border patrol along our land borders.  And yes, if someone threatens harm against Americans, or American interests (this of course does not include American political interests, those instersts that economically benefit some people,  or ideological interests) and a legitimate declaration of war by our congress is inacted, they will be obligated to defend our nation.  And after a certian period of service to thier nation, they will be granted entry into higher education or job training.  I also belive there should be NO EXCEPTIONS.  All should do whatever they can to support democracy.  Even a "consciencious objecter" should serve in a civilian capacity, and all, regardless of economic status should be required to serve his or her country.

The reason I am for conscription is that those who promote war have no investment in it.  If those who promote war understood that they, or thier children would have to serve,  it would be very clear what the threat was, that all options short of going to war would have been debated, tried, and found to be non effective and  that war is the absolute last resort...before the first shots are fired.

If there was conscription, and there was a war on, more people would be interested in real news, knowing that thier butts are on the line.  No longer would O.J. Simpson's book, or K-Fed's divorce be more important than the war in our media, and no longer would we look up to people who support war and have avoided service be given a voice.  Simply this...if more Americans had "skin in the game", we would pay much more attention to it, ask harder questions and demand precise answers.  We would ask for timetables and benchmarks to see if we were meeting an objective set before the war began.  and ask for correction if those goals are not being achevied on the course we are going.  In other words...oversight by the people footing the bill...the American taxpayer.

I think it is EVERYONE'S duty as a beneficiary of this great nation to be willing, ready and able to defend it in case of emergency.  We must get out of the mindset that being patriotic is just slapping a "Support Our Troops" magnet on your car.

Peace Be Unto You
