A unique feature of this wave of immigration across our shared border with Mexico is the issue of commitment, or lack thereof.

Legal immigrants from Mexico are committed to America.  They become valued American citizens and enrich our culture with their heritage, just as has been the case for immigrants from other countries throughout our history.

Illegal immigrants, on the other hand, have no such commitment.  The unique accessibility of their homeland allows them to come and go clandestinely, with their allegiance only to Mexico.  America is strictly an economic opportunity for them.

Worse, this feeds the beast of greed in our own leadership.  Their collusion threatens the erosion of the cornerstone of our nation - respect for the law.

I respect the illegal immigrants for their guts and determination.  Most of them would be a welcome addition to our culture through legal immigration.  But they don’t respect America.  Their illegal activity undermines America.

We are a nation of laws, not men.  George Washington refused Kingship when it was offered him because that was anathema to the ideals of our founding fathers.  The implications of that cornerstone ideal are enormous for the equality of all people under the law.
