Well, I don't have the time for this. I came here to learn from others, and to do a little teaching myself. I want to have a dialogue, not a s***ting match. Frankly I'm disappointed with everyone here that has watched this happen and did not speak up. When someone can get away with attacking your religion, your ethnicity, your gender, your color, and all the other things you can't control that make you you, then they'll keep on doing it for the pure sport. That's the monster you now have in your midst. If you had all told him that that was wrong, he would have discarded the abusive tactic or he would have left. Now you know why Leonard Clark no longer posts here. Agree with Leonard or not, there was no need for Carter to accuse Leonard of having a wetback wife, or being a poor nigger. This may only be an online forum, but this is our home to write our stories and express our views. What happens here is important to me. Unacceptable is unacceptable.
So I'm gone. Let Tom (or his literary progeny Reaper) tell you I'm a coward. He's yours. Perhaps he'll be on good behavior for a while to show you that it was MiC who was the disrupting force here, but I'm pretty sure that holiday will be short lived. A bully will always be a bully, especially the ones who can attack from behind a keyboard without any personal accountability. The real Tom Carter will soon be back. He's yours to deal with as you see fit.
It's not easy for me to walk away. I've come to appreciate nearly everyone here a great deal. Even when I get into it with my ideological opponents (and occasionally my allies), I still have a great deal of respect for anybody that puts their beliefs to the test, and is willing to defend them in an intelligent and respectful manner. I never confuse someone with a difference of opinion from me as my enemy. They often are my closest friends. So with that, goodbye friends.

Oh dear, MIC, this is not good. Guess I'll just wade in with my twenty cents worth. My first blogging site ("just another Cranky Little Blog") went up on November 3, 2004. It was my "B" plan for a presidential loss. While some folks went into therapy, I guess I just elected to go into the "streets" (digitally speaking) and find another way to "win". From then until my radio show launched in 2006 I blogged, mostly on my own site, but often I went to the winger sites to test my "mettle". To take them on and let me tell you, they're some seriously nasty partisans out there who will threaten physical harms CSI couldn't explain. Sometimes I was so angry I would cry. Sometimes I would lower myself to their vitriolic levels. Sometimes I would win--sometimes lose--but in every case I got a little stronger. A little thicker skin. A little shinier armour. And most of all I learned that the people who threatened to kill me as soon as any terrorist were really, almost identical to me. Hard to believe I know. But I found this out when after withstanding sometimes months of abuse finally one, then another, then a third, would start to write reasonably in their comments to me. Sometimes they'd comment to me "back-channel" (on private email) commending me for my courage in standing up to the nastiest of others--people they wouldn't come out and condemn themselves) telling me they were ashamed for these writers. I spent weeks sometimes reading winger posts on site I couldn't register on trying to decipher their lexicon because believe me, their definitions for things as simple as the word "moral" is distinctly different from those of a liberal. It was learning these things--and discovering from whom they were learning these new definitions (think tanks and talk show hosts mouthing think tank and extreme right wing idealogues jargon) that I came to understand how dangerous the new right really is. How important it is not only to fight back--push back--hard, but how necessary it is to literally save this country, to save my own family. I became a better writer but most of all I learned I could take on all the arguments, stand my ground, get my point across and *not* take it personally. I could prevail. I could help others feel motivated to prevail as well. There are "trolls" MIC. You know that. When you walk away, they win--*we* lose--it is their goal, to shut your voice down even on one little message board. The way to defeat a troll, or any other writer whose method of communicating is to attack, is simply to ignore them. Really. They go away, or end up in little private conversations with the one or two others with whom they agree, themselves marginalized--but it is not you *you* who suffers. Rethink it MIC.

Reaper, You and your "Pops" were a large factor in the slow growth of VofAZ. Your personal attacks discouraged people from joining or playing a part in the threads. (I know this for a fact). Why would anyone, especially someone is who new to this type of forum, want to subject themselves to the type of personal abuse that you and father dealt out on a constant basis? There is a civil way to disagree. Calling people wetbacks, niggers, and chinks does not help the dialogue. Ridiculing people's religious beliefs is un-necessary. Calling physicians killers does not advance your cause. Posts that border on anti-semitism, if not outright anti-semitism are not necessary or acceptable. Calling women here whores, wet nurses, concubines is childish. Posting a comment after registering a VofAZ members name at another blog was immoral and unethical, and threatening to continue the action was outrageous. I still don't understand why the owners of VofAZ didn't terminate Tom right then and there. Perhaps your observation that VofAZ has "achieved very little as far as you can tell" is because you and "pops" polluted it with your slash and burn personal insults. If you meant to change any minds, you went about it the wrong way. Going back to January, one of our astute posters said this about TC. It seems a little like were all on an elevator you rip a silent but deadly fart . . . step off on the next floor and turn and look at us all and call us a bunch of smelly bastards? Take your elevator ride someplace else Carter.

Carter? Tom Carter? Okay, this person has a name. I honestly don't remember reading his posts. Really--or from time to time--but they had no effect on me. I think I tried responding to one or two until I figured him out. Now, who cares? Troll. Move on. Again, on boards that are unmoderated --(which can dissolve, I've seen it happen even on bigger winger sites because people don't have the time to weed through the crap) the tactic for "survival" is to scan comments and get to know the writers. Then stop reading those from writers you decide are not worthy of your attention. No different then any social event. You blow off the Losers! Eventually one can even learn to take pot shots at the Losers while barely noticing what they were saying to begin with (it's what they are doing to you--why not learn the tactic for your own use when you run into them)! To me, it's just another tactical skill. Frankly, I wouldn't abandon a board any more then I'd abandon a political party. I guess it's that "Not on my watch you don't" mentality of mine! MIC?

MIC, Bulls***!!! DOn't you dare leave the site bcause of Carter's off handed idiotic comments. You and I along with Indie Az Mod, Phaedrus, Free Thinker, AZ Rightwinger and a choice few others have been the regulars here for too long for us to start bailingout on the system that gave us the voice on the first place. You and I have forged a fairly good friendship over these lines which have spilt over into the flesh and blood world. I 'll be damnedif I am going to let one of the good liberals on this site who can articulate his arguement just leave and fade into the sunset over one asswhipes actions. I know that some of you have seen MIC and I fight up a storm on this site over the last two years and more than one f you are probably scratching their heads right now trying to figure me out. It's simple, MIC makes me think. While we are diametrically oppossed ton just about every subject we are firmly on the same side when it comes to one important issue, our right to speak freely and express our views. MIC, I beg you (and you have never seen those words on my postings), don't bail because this guy is giving you grief. I have been absent a great deal of late because of a slew of personal objectives I have been following in my life, and have missed some of you and Tom's agruements, but there is no reason to let this guy get to you when the site is so very close to entering into it's true potential as a nationwide informational format. We have added Cynthia who whole heartedly supports most of your views and who, like you, is an ardent supporter of liberal causes. This is important as we move forward especially when the elections are creaping up around the next calender bend. The site may still lack writer but it has readers beyond your wildest dreams. Opportunity for you to change the minds of literally millions is within your grasp... MIC, please reconsider. We are a team here. We may all be rowing different directions but that is what happens when there is a void of leadership... Be the change you want to see MIC, isn't that the liberal motto if getting making things better?

Cynthia, I'm not retreating out of fear of Tom Carter. I am asking what is the use of my resistance if my "blowing off the losers" is done in isolation? My silent treatment, or my standing against him means nothing if I do this by myself. Rather than encouraging people to similarly speak out against a troll, I have now heard from two people who find a brother in arms with the man. That's not a silent treatment; that's a reward and an invitation to continue the abuse. When a board is unmoderated, and the small number of core users fail to moderate themselves, then what's there to lose by walking away? You said that when I walk away, he wins. I say that when we tolerate this behavior, he has already won. No large blog ever got to be that way by letting the trolls take command during the early years. We have a responsibility to care what is said here. Remaining silent while a crime is committed makes you an accessory. Isn't that why so many have been saying that Democrats are just as bad as Republicans? You are new here Cynthia. This has been going on since January. I've been patient, but now it's time to lay it on the line. Maybe a strike is what it takes to bring this matter to the attention of the management. I will come back when Carter has either left of his own accord, has been shown the door, or faces a unified front that states unambiguously that he treat all members in an acceptable manner or be ignored by all. The sad thing is that Tom would be an excellent member of Voice of Arizona if he were to bring his views to the table sans the personal attacks. If he truly wanted to bring his wisdom to others he would enlighten, coerce, and even cajole within the confines of civil debate; not employ the same politics of personal destruction that we are already so weary of enduring on a national scale.

| MIC, I join the voices that urge you to stick around. What I do with the mentioned posters, one who claims to be the son of the other, is just skip over their posts when I'm reading comments. You, MIC, are an intelligent caring individual. I agree with a large percentage of your comments and disagree with some. My point is that your thoughts are needed in this world and on this board. I've often thought that Tom Carter was one of the protestors of the 60's college crowd that never did get out of his revolution mode. Mind you, I have no problem with those who protested during the 60's. They accomplished some positive things in this country and, in fact, we need that same mental attidude right now today more than then. Some who protested the government during those days are now fighting hard for governmental remorm in various ways and some are stuck in the 60's. It is my belief that TC is one of the latter and if Reaper is to be believed and he actually is TC's son then obviously he was well taught. So, MIC, as Cynthia said ignore the trolls and they'll go away. Just dry up and die for lack of watering (or responses as the case may be). I know it's hard not to respond to personal attacks but those who don't are the winners. I'm sure I'll hear from you again worse case scenario after they depart. As a side, Cynthia I caught your show yesterday and was very impressed with your compassion and commitment. I have to listen on the computer so will try to be on my computer Sundays as I think you are very informative and interesting. Good luck and may you continue to broadcast the truth.
