MoveOn gets

Sorry, typo.

The title of the article was "MoveOn gets Dixie Chicked". "Dixie Chicked" has become word (verb) in the pop lexicon.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from criticism or contradiction or condemnation. The Senate resolution doesn't question MoveOn's right to publish their hateful screed. It condemns them for doing so and makes each Senator take a stand on the record.

The student wasn't tasered for asking AN innocent question. What led to him being tasered was refusing to surrender the microphone so others could speak after asking 3 questions. The announced rule was 1 question per person. Others besides "don't tase me bro" had a right to ask their questions as well.

BTW In other comments I have asserted the NY Times left wing political prejudice. The fact they gave MoveOn a deep discount for their ad ought to dispell the illusion they are impartial dispensers of truth.     

Nice Op-Ed piece, Scott, but I think you're boxing shadows in a GOP box.  Look, no one has refuted the points in the MoveOn,org ad - the best objective rebuttals I've seen are opinion and conjecture.  There's enough of that in MoveOn.org's ad, too, so instead of demonstrating that the ad's wrong, the best the opposition can do is raise the question - it's up to the reader to decide who to believe.

Bush has admitted the bemedalled general was his stalking horse - "The country will believe Petraeus, they won't believe me."  And what's really interesting is that the country didn't believe Petraeus - the polls show no change, before and after Petraeus' testimony, in attitudes about the war or the success of the surge,    

Inside the Beltway, Bush's and the GOP Noise Machine's flogging of the MoveOn.org ad did have the desired effect - to wit, the Senate vote.  So what?  Get real - it's conventional Republican political theater - just another feint to drive the real issues off the front page.

I'd also suggest that any comparison of the ad with the Swiftboat campaign is wholly misguided and creates yet another distraction.  If anything, the Republican backlash against MoveOn.org has it's roots in the same fertilizer as the Swiftboat ads and that's all.

Prometheus - the Democrats failed us?  Hey Spots, the Webb amendment and the Habeas Corpus amendment received a MAJORITY of votes in the Senate this week - but not the 60 REQUIRED for passage.  Now, you could say the Democrats FAILED US or you could say the Republicans WHUPPED OUR ASS on those votes, your choice. 

The fact is, the Democratic Senate leadership is bringing legislation to the floor to right the wrongs of everything surrounding this hellish, illegal war and it's true, THEY DON'T HAVE THE VOTES FOR PASSAGE - but those are REPUBLICAN votes that they don't have. 

So, to say the Democrats have failed us is misleading, at best, in my humble opinion.  What would you have Harry Reid do - manufacture the votes OR water down the legislation to attract more GOP votes OR bribe the bastards? 

Just hang on - Bush has kept the Senate Republicans in line so far but those who are up for re-election are increasingly vulnerable for it.  This is perhaps the sickest aspect of the politization of the Iraq War - A HANDFUL OF SENATE REPUBLICAN VOTES ARE BLOCKING THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE!  Will Republican incumbents be held accountable by the 70% of the electorate who want some legislation to end the War - immediately?  Seems pretty likely, so the question is how long can these incumbents toe the White House party line - hoping Bush is right - before they begin to worry about their own political defeat? 

The sickest part is - how many more lives will be snuffed out before these intractable, goose-stepping Republicans come around? 

Spots, don't undersell the Senate Democrats - they're not only your best hope for beginning the troop withdrawal ASAP, they're your only hope!  Mine, too!

RE: Representative Thomas M. Davis III, Republican of Virginia, has urged the House to hold hearings on the MoveOn.org ad and to investigate whether The Times gave the group an improper discount. A New York Times Company spokeswoman has said that the group paid a standard “standby” rate.

Get your facts straight. Rudy got the same price as MoveOn for his anti-MoveOn ad. There was no prejudicial discount. The NYT has always given the same flat rate for that kind of ad.

When I read that, I got a flash of deja'vu. I figure you didn't watch the Dixie Chicks documentary "Shut up and Sing", because, you know...

In that highly reviewed documentary, (even by conservatives in my home town) there was a scene where Natalie Maines was sitting watching the tube live, and Tom Brockaw's questioned Bush about the controversy, and Bush said something like, "They have a right to say what they want to say, but they shouldn't have their feelings hurt if people don't buy their records."

Natalie said, "What a dumb f***." And she looked right to the camera and pointed to it as if she was talking to Bush right in the eye, and said, "You're a dumb f***."

That's my girl.

You made the same point as Bush. I'm not saying anything... I'm just saying.

June, I'd think the House had better things to do than investigate the NY Times ad rates. They can give whatever rate they want to. How convenient that the paper that brought us Jason Blair declines to disclose details. I suppose with the investigation happy Congress created by the Pelosi/Reid axis where the investigation subtitutes for legislation this sort of thing was inevitable.

In case it's too subtle for you, this is a cricism of a Republican. My Kool-Aid supply is running low. :-)

Scott, "dumb ****" represents the pinnacle of Leftist debate, Bush pisses me off so he's a fill in the pejorative. The fact you are willing to accept the ignorant opinion of an entertainer over the analysis of a decorated 4-star general or the President speaks volumes about your willing suspension of disbelief.  The Left's inability to do anything but cry about their rights when criticised continues to amuse me. Oh well, it's so much easier than debating the issue.
