This is a distillation of thought after reading the Voice of Arizona articles for several months now.
Most of the action is in the Political arena, which I guess is predictable in these times. Voice of Arizona categorizes the sentiments expressed there as Liberal and Conservative. I disagree. I think jeano captures it better as Pro-Bush and Anti-Bush because there's simply no Liberal or Conservative foundation to the views expressed here.
In fact, the mini-discussion that AZ Moderate has fostered shows that the Anti-Bush camp consists of Liberals and Conservatives who long for a government where they could implement their political philosophies in a meaningful way.
Republican and Democrat doesn't work either, though it's a convenient dichotomy for the Abramoff Payoff scandal.
I contend the Bush Administration has defined a new classification of political philosophy - Crooks, Liars, Bullies and Incompetents comes to mind but that's too glib and descriptive of the participants. Maybe Meglomaniacal Cronyism is a better choice. But, I've digressed.
Voice of Arizona's objective of establishing a "better balance" of political thinkers ("In truth, our attempts to attract more conservatives to the website for the sake of political balance have been unsuccessful…") seems hopeless. The political articles at VofAZ, which focus primarily on national politics, pretty well reflect the results of the national polls and, as already noted, at least one self-professed Conservative has shown up in the Anti-Bush camp.
No, VofAZ is looking for some Pro-Bush individuals but they'd have to be suicidal to publish much. Though I'd love to hear a rational defense or any persuasive argument to support a President who has racked up a Federal Deficit in 5 years that tops all previous presidential efforts in the past 254 years! A defense for Permanent Tax Cuts for the wealthiest in the nation? Or, Illegally Spying on U.S. citizens? Perhaps, Bungling the greatest Natural Disaster to ever strike the country? Maybe, Lying us into a War and Designating the Humvee a Combat Vehicle? How about Muzzling Subordinates to prevent Congressional Inquiry?
Where are the Bush supporters? They're out there, but so's the truth and that's what prevents them from staying long at VoAZ - oh, they surface to sling some mud, then return to watching FOX News but they don't stick around because the truth'll swamp them here!
Maybe VofAZ's value as a forum for political bebate will be realized when the local and state races get underway. Until then, I think you've gotta live with the dominance of Anti-Bush thought here. I guess if we didn't have Average American we'd have to invent him! He helps us understand the real value of our commitment!
