Dear Mr. Rove,

Last Friday you appeared at a Republican fundraiser in New Hampshire and accused Democratic critics of the Iraq war effort of “cutting and running.” You also said of Rep. John Murtha and Sen. John Kerry: “They may be with you for the first shots, but they’re not going . . . to be with you for the tough battle.”

Well Mr. Rove, at least both of these men were there for the first shots. When the first shots rang out in Vietnam, you were nowhere to be found. When the battle was raging in Vietnam, your President was AWOL from the National Guard and your Vice President had other commitments. Conservative radio commentator Rush Limbaugh was having his pilonidal cyst attended to, and Fox News chickenhawk pundits Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity also missed the action. In fact, nearly all the Republican leadership today has no firsthand experience with war, and their secondhand experience consists of asking young men and woman to go to Iraq and avenge the events of 9-11, despite the absence of any connection between the two.

These gentlemen you slander believe that our current strategy in Iraq grows the insurgency every day, unnecessarily sacrifices the lives of American soldiers, and has the inevitable consequence of civil war. They advocate a realistic plan of troop redeployment “over the horizon” – not, as you would have us believe, retreat. You are a liar and a partisan hack to suggest otherwise, but then again, that is your job.
