Today is the day! At least that is what all of the political analysts are saying about the Iowa caucus. We are 11 months away from the election and all eyes of the political world are focused on Iowa to see who the representatives for the parties are going to be for President.
Forgive me, but doesn't these seem way too early to have the entire country decide who is going to be our President? And forgive me for saying this, but Iowa is not exactly the pulse of the nation! I grew up in the mid-west and have a lot of respect for these people, but they do have a myopic view of the world. I know they all get jazzed about the process and do give it their all, but for a country of over 300 million people to have this one caucus make the decision for the election is a little far fetched.
We have to look at what all of the candidates have to say, and frankly, most of them have answered with non-answers! I just wish all of them would take a solid position on something so that we the voters can really make an honest assessment of the qualifications. I know, that sounds Utopian! The whole political process has become so much about big business and big egos that the "common" person doesn't have a chance to run. Mitt Romney spending six million dollars in Iowa precludes any of us from ever having a shot at such an office. All of the leading candidates have war chests of money to spend on these conquests, mostly from people with special interests. Interests that do not mirror what we the common folk are even thinking!
My fear is that with the rampant acceleration of the primaries that we are going to narrow the field down so fast that the right candidate is going to get left in the dust. Those candidates that appear to have the edge after the next few weeks are going to get a ton of money thrown at them possibly for the wrong platform.
I don't care if you are Republican or Democrat. All of us need to watch this process that is happening tonight and not let it make the future. There is a lot of time left before the November elections and a lot of interesting problems are going to pop up prior to that time. I encourage each and everyone of you to carefully look at the candidate that you feel is going to take this Country back to being the Greatest Country on the planet! Let's just hope that it is not decided tonight!

| Right On, Free Thinker! We need to keep reminding ourselves - and everyone within earshot - that the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries have been parlayed into Full Employment Programs for the incurious media!

| June, That is the best point about all of this...the inept media!!! I have not heard any real hard questions from any of the mainstream media during this whole process. The reason...they don't want to be left out of the bus tours and access to these people! The media is the one crowning the king/queen in this event way before November. Pinball, you are also right that everyone that gets inside the Beltway turns into millionaires! Seems to reflect the common person doesn't it. |

| Free Thinker, I never understood this institutionalized way of running the party caucuses, or how such an elitist arrangement could survive in a democracy. But hey, if we like the way the caucus shakes out the main players (I don't), then at least rotate the calendar order so that each state gets a shot at going first and screwing up our future. Make the draw a big annual TV event on the Fox Network, with Dennis Miller pulling brightly painted state lotto balls from a spinning cage. Maybe then people will pay attention. The winning state should also get some sort of material prize too, like a whole year of federal No Child Left Behind funding. Pinball, The answer is instant runoff voting. If we embraced IRV for the whole presidential horse-race, we could get rid of caucuses and primaries all together. |

| I've advocated for an instant runoff system. Let anyone run, who can gather say, 3 million signatures, then everyone vote on the first Tuesday of Nov. Rank all their candidates 1 - X, then count the votes.

The two party system will be the death of us all. I mean, it works in theory but when you have idiots abusing it anyway they can you seem to run into issues like a s***ty economy, unreasonable war and a country overflowing with illegals. And somehow the guy that starts it all ends up walking out of office making more money than before.
