Today's show moved, for the most part, down a straight line. The topic was cost of living. We never really got beyond oil, but as a product we all use in it's refined state, that really wasn't a problem.
But many of the callers took what I would describe as side roads once in a while. Not really a problem except of where they went. It seems to me, and I could be wrong but I was there and this is what I heard, that most callers shared a singular opinion of the Bush administration. And yes I know it is broadcast on 1480 KPHX, a liberal Air America, Nova M affiliate station.
Now I have some fun from time to time firing off topics to get debate started but I have always thought of most liberals as, if nothing else, capable of seeing things that are there and and seeing things that are not there and being able to tell the difference. I expect they will have a different opinion while still keeping one foot in the realm of reality. But today we were bombarded by caller after caller wanting to essentially say that all of the bad in the world can be laid at the feet of one George W. Bush.
From Global Warming to terrorism, from high gas prices to the current housing crisis, from CAFE standards to the generalized conservative movement, everything under the sun can be traced back to George W. Bush. I can only wonder what would have been the answer had I proposed the backward rotation of the moon around the Earth as a serious topic. Undoubtedly with the fanatical group of callers we had today, save a very few, the answer would have been unanimous, "It is George W. Bush's fault."
Today he was accused of causing and accelerating Global Warming, going into Iraq for the sole purpose of making himself and his "crime family" richer, of causing, single handedly mind you or with the help of the Vice President, the rise in oil prices world wide, again for the sole purpose of enriching himself and his family's friends, of spying on the American people with the only real objective being to catch those who oppose him in some compromising position (Spitzer was named specifically) in order to destroy those who would somehow "out" some secret activity. Then to top the whole thing off, The New York Times was hailed as the arbiter of Constitutional Protection when they released the information that the United States had a program (a secret program) that tracked the deposits and transfers of moneys being routed either to or through accounts known or thought to be associated with terrorist activity.
While I have heard all of these accusations before (many are outlines in MIC's newest article on the marquee), until today I had never heard them enumerated verbally in such a short two hour time span. It was amazing.
On top of all this George W. Bush was tied to among other things the government's bailout of Bear Stearns (as though that was a bad idea done in a vacuum) which may well have served to prop up our financial markets long enough for some of the panic to subside as though there was another avenue that could have been taken. The other avenue was to let it all go south. In that there is no choice. I even got one caller to agree with me when I said that Hugo Chavez must have been right in saying he could still smell the sulfur at the podium after Bush had spoken a day earlier, (at the UN) because Bush is in fact, Satan.
So I have to ask, with all of George W. Bush's power and all of the shady, sometime maniacal activity going on, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, how can any of you who believe this ever get a good night's sleep? No wonder you have lost your sense of humor, so easily become unnecessarily offended, read into anyone's intentions some dubious intent and generally act like paranoid schizophrenics.
It must suck to be you. (To put in the vernacular of the day)
But what would I know; I'm just an Average American.

| Funny piece AA. Since you asked, you could say creating Nova M and AAR (both a vision of two nutty liberal Chicagoans, the Drobny's), and the re-energisation of the left not to mention founding the careers of hosts like Malloy, Rhodes an yes even little me, is all pushback on 70's profit-driven policies begun in the Reagan years; Bush is only the inheritor of a torch tossed over Clinton's head, so GW had a lot of ground to cover. If you look closely you will find that more than any President before him, and employing the brightest of the winger and neocon admin faculty' of bygone Rep admins going back to Nixon the Crook to facilitate it, he has done more to circumvent Congress with his so-called Presidential privilege (from signing statements to recess appointments to blatantly pro-admin agency political appointees and more) than ANY president (save Roosevelt-- God Bless his soul) with the sole purpose to thwart Congress and therefore, the will of the people. People who for two terms tried to elect another president and for two elections, had their votes subverted using parallel strategies of subversion of the will of the people in the form of voter suppression and election fraud. By so-doing, he has in fact become-- particularly in this century-- the one to move forward policies begun with Reagan (massive deregulation intended to destroy ALL New Deal regulation of industry from banking to energy to manufacturing) and hence, using the outcomes YOU described, furthering global heating, driving up oil prices by deflating the dollar through debt financed foreign occupation, and the mortgage debacle through allowed bundling of sub-prime loans as equity assets gathered through an unregulated mortgage industry and so on-- yes, Bush IS responsible, but he is not the creator of what he has inherited. You are. Republicans who I think naively and without proper skepticism inspected the policies and the values behind them you sy you share and are therefore why you support the policies. So though I don't know how others sleep I know I can because every day I get up and literally work to discover what I can about how systems that used to support the middle class engine that made the United States something to be proud of --(not-for-profit healthcare and unions), a country worthy of defending for its least as well as greatest citizens (Social Security and Medicare), whose institutions supported the implementation of the loftiest ideals of equity (the entire UNADULTERATED Bill of Rights), whose people struggled to overcome bias when they could (civili rights) and found the courage to legislate it when the could not (affirmative action)-- I examine, analyze, compare, and then report on the process used to deconstruct all the systems that made those American systems work and how to fight back using the systems or bypassing them. And I think many liberals would find a place in the stream of work I just described where they are applying themselves as well. A better question AA, is how, being a part of a the economic and security problems you daily live with --and not the solution -- do you sleep at night? |

| Average, Excellent article! Every thing is Bush's fault! We need to keep reminding ourselves that this is a liberal site and they respect only their own. No one with a brain agrees with them we just laugh and let them rant, why waste our time they are all brainwashed from listening to liberal radio talk shows all day! Thats what keeps them going, they are not convincing anyone to change their vote.

| To start with AA, I think you miss the entire reason American citizens blame Bush for what has happened during his Presidency. They are holding him accountable and responsible. For anyone to have any success at anything, they must take 100% responsibilty for their actions, and the outcome of the process. Whether it is a fast food fry guy, general contractor, bank teller, or President of Enron, the customers, clients, and shareholders will all hold you responsible, and the President of the US is no better. As for the list of complaints from your screed:
Until the people on the right understand that certain things about America are sacred - Habeas Corpus, we don't torture, individual rights, the right to be secure in our own persons, and papers, ie the Bill of Rights, then what difference did it make who won the Cold War? If American citizens can be arrested, and sent to Gitmo w/o cause, and no legal recourse, then how is that different from the Soviet Union? Oh, wait, is this "might makes right", and "its OK as long as Republicans do it"? |

The American people, even Average ones that don't own 5 cars and waste energy to prove a stupid point, are SICK AND TIRED of the direction this country has taken. The Presidential polls are meaningless right now. The Dems don't have a candidate yet and McCain is getting a free ride in the press. That will change after the Dem's have their nominee and coalesce around him/her. There will be debates and Grandpa W McWar is going to be in trouble. He loves Bush's war, which by the way, is going worse every day. And he admits that he knows nothing about the economy. I said before and I will say it again. This election is going to be Reagan/Carter type wipeout, only reversed. |
