“I believe in America! I believe in America as a nation of laws! I believe in the Magna Carta and the U.S. Constitution and Habeas Corpus!”
I heard a local Right Wing Radio Talker offer this segue yesterday before railing: “BUT - there are five LIBERALS on the Supreme Court who don't share these beliefs!”
Au contraire, you ignorant ass - and to anyone else who thinks this way including Justices Roberts, Alito, Thomas and Scalia!
Read my lips you jingoistic, fear mongering, chicken hawks - what’s been done at Gitmo in your name and mine is ILLEGAL!
The Supreme Court has ruled twice - twice before this - that detainees held at Guantanamo without charges can go into civilian courts to challenge the US government to justify their continued detention. After the first ruling, the shameless Bush administration and the rubberstamp Republican-controlled Congress changed the law in an attempt to close the courthouse doors on the detainees.
Take note, all you armchair patriots: the second time around, the SCOTUS specifically struck down a provision of the Military Commissions Act of 2006 that denies the Gitmo detainees the right to file petition of habeas corpus.
Thank god that, after the ‘06 midterm elections, that legislative ball of string has been played out - but someone needs to tell that to our numbskull president! He’s off in Rome considering whether to seek new legislation in light of the ruling “so we can safely say to the American people, ’We are doing everything we can to protect you’”
Thanks, but no thanks, President Bush - this American person as well as the Supreme Court of the United States says the protection you provide is ILLEGAL! Forget it!
