We all remember the movie Wall Street with Michael Douglas as Gordon Gekko, the stereotypical Wall Street Robber Barron, and that famous line, “Greed is good.” But how many of you really took that to heart? How many of you saw that and thought to yourself, “typical Republican, always out for themselves.”
I’m sure many of you, based on the things you have written here, were quite impressed with this not so died in the wool caricature of the mean and ruthless, in your eyes "Reagan-like", self centered, all for one and one for one 1980’s republican. But in his words was a world a truth. For it is greed that has moved this country and for that matter this animal called man forward by leaps and bounds instead of baby steps.
In the last 100 years we have witnessed the birth of most of the great business models operating on the planet today. Think back to life before the telephone, the computer, the car, plane, modern grocery stores with refrigeration. Commerce my friends is the purest form of greed and the most virtuous.
Do you like diamonds ladies? Greed brings them out of the ground. Do you like to drink beer and wine, eat cheese with your doctor and lawyer friends while driving back and forth to your “Holiday Parties” in your imported Japanese and German or Bavarian automobiles? Greed brings it all to you. Perhaps you like the idea of being able to hear your baby from another room, or vaccinate him or her from the deadly diseases of the world. Greed created them, ships them, warehouses them and pays for the research and development of them. Nothing on this planet happens without a sufficient profit motive. And nothing should. I give you the Roman Catholic Church and the Latter Day Saints (Mormons for you morons) as two examples of organizations who entire focus is good works, yet there is an incredible profit motive at work here and has been in the case of the Catholics for nearly 2000 years. But look how the LDS has worked to catch up. Oh, heaven's going to be a crowded place!
The Utopians among us here will argue that some people do the right things for the right reasons and they will have a point. But “some” is not most. How many of them donate 100% of the money made from those products to the people who buy them? And how many of them are so convinced that the government is the best steward of their wealth and treasury that they give above and beyond their tax liability to the government to help finance those very important programs that they constantly defend here day in and day out? I’ll give you a second to think that one over. You hear Warren Buffet talk of a heavy tax burden for guys like him. Well that’s great, but does he write a bigger check than the law requires at the end of the year? No he doesn’t. He instead gives away billions to his and other charitable organizations because he must think they do a better job with the money? No. he does it because of the profit associated with being Warren Buffet. Advertising his good works is part of his job.
Greed is what drives most of us to work every day. Deny it if you want, but you’re only producing the smoke and mirrors for yourself. We know from world history, CNN, The Children’s Christian Feed the Starving little African programs that most of the world survives on little. So don’t come back and tell me that you work to support your family, put a roof over their head and place food on your table. You can do that for $500.00 a month in many parts of this country. Live in a shack, eat what you kill and you have the necessities of this life covered. But that’s not what you want is it?
Hell no it isn’t! At least I am honest enough to say I want a big ass house, of which I own a couple, a big ass car, of which I own a few, and a big ass bank account, which I now have, so that I can do what I want when I want to do it. That big ass car has hauled more turkey diners this year than ever before, and the big ass bank account funded it. My greed paid for the home builder to build my houses, putting dozens of people to work. Detroit should kiss my ass for all the American steel I have floating around this planet right now, hundreds more workers there would offer up a thank you (if the Union would allow them to think for themselves). And every time I take a vacation to yet another great American city I am spreading the wealth with my fellow citizens who only so gleefully take it right out of my hot little hand. You know why, because their greedy too and God bless them for it.
So the next time any of you want to sit in your ivory towers and look down your noses at me and my ilk, feel free to offer up your holdings to the first person who asks, because you are not greedy. Go ahead and write check for twice what Uncle Sam says you have to pay then just post it here so we can see that you are the real enlightened one, and not a poser like the rest of the Liberals in this country who talk a good game but have little commitment to really get their hands dirty. People like me live our philosophy every day. Shouldn't you live yours?
And over $600,000,000.00 (Obama’s campaign war chest) tells me that Liberals have it in them, they are willing to pay for the right to get all their stuff free from others which is the worst form of greed. My greed makes me work hard to help other through commerce, but your greed makes you do nothing and expect everyone else to work hard to take care of you thus enslaving not only yourself but all those who have to work harder to take up your slack. Liberating and Freedom inspiring is the way America used to be before the advent of the modern American liberal.
Our world has been moved forward by Greed. Every step of the way!
But what would I know: I’m just an Average American.

I agree with you that 'greed' is what drives our economy and currently drives into a ditch....
As far as greed goes, there too is a difference between owning something and possessing something as a debt. And the greed monster makes little differentiation,
What needs further elucidation, is the difference in TYPES of greed....There is long-term broadbased and short term narrow minded greed...
Raygunomics epitimized the latter...
1. Debt dont matter,
2. And empower those who have already benefited the most with more resources and they will piss on you, sorry trickle down on you..
Debt DOES matter, and it may very well prove to be what will take Capitalism down.
Debt got Raygunites what they wanted THEN, and passed the TRUE costs to future generations WITH INTEREST....
And those who were empowered took more and more and more and more as we see the middle class dwindling and the gap between the rich and poor resemble many third world countries, instead of the middle class heydays of post WWII.
Do Blue TEAMers have greed?
Do they want what they want NOW and are willing to borrow with interest and pass on to our children, grand children and great grand children or will they bite the bullet and WORK hard to PAY FOR IT NOW?
Or after all the SHORT term GREED of the past, do they even have an OPTION?
