I just have to say, there has never been a game made that made for a console that single handedly made me want to buy said console... until now.
Gears of War for the xbox 360 is that game. I've watched the commercial attentively 50 times, and every time it makes me want it more. Why you ask?
Probably the best marketing I've seen done for a game in a long, long time. I mean, this game rocks, and you can tell by just watching the commercial. They put a remixed version of the tune "Mad World" by Gary Jules in there and it just flows with the trailer phenomenally. Much like the old saying by a guy I don't remember his name, "this world won't end with a bang, but with a whimper".
It's good to see artists and marketers flexing their creative muscles... they went all out on this one.
Good job to both Epic and never thought I would say it, Microsoft.

Why are these videos game boxes so expensive? And, can an old lady ask a stupid question? What is so interesting about sitting at these types of games for a long time. I just want to know. Zanubiyah

"this world won't end with a bang, but with a whimper". T.S. Eliot wrote "the world ends not with a bang, but with a whimper". The commercial was hardly original.

if there were a way to be god for a few hours. zanubiya... would you try it? the consoles are so expensive because of what they can do. i.e. not just play games, but movies and browse the internet as well. game consoles are becomming more like computers year after year, i think you have a moderate idea of how expensive computer components can be.

Uh, the commercial didn't explicitly say that, or anything for that matter, it was my weak attempt at trying to explain the feeling the commercial gave me. If you watch football (or anything else that can be deemed "cool"), I'm sure you'll see the commercial. And yes, the commercial was highly original. As far as explaining why people play video games... For old people, playing slot machines would be a prime example. I know many old people that like to sit there and hit the max bet button on the slot machines. Anybody that has looked into it can tell you, the negative expectation of doing this is on the absurd level. Video games on the other hand, have a negative expectation of the price of the game (and any hardware you invested in), which when it's all said and done, is constant relative to your current equipment, ie, if you don't buy any more, your negative expectation will not change (except for lost time for work, but we'll omit that for the sake of simplicity). Also, many people view playing video games as a competitive activity somewhat similar to a sport... but I guess it would be more of a sport like pool is a sport, because you are doing minimal physical activity, yet it requires a high degree of skill to be victorious against other skillful competitors. I can talk about why people sit in front of a video game all day long, but I won't because I enjoy playing them too much, so I'll just leave it at that.
