AzMod-- This is for you. In a previous post, you voiced qualified support for innocent Mexican children who were carried over the border. Please read Josh Bernstein's quote below and consider the timeline of your support. Yes, we need to secure borders. In the meantime, schools across the country are dealing with hundreds of thousands of students (many who are scholarship material) who now think they "have no future."
Please read and consider.
The Dream Act is bipartisian. If you are against The Dream Act you are FAR RIGHT of Orin Hatch and John McCain, former sponsors of The Dream Act. Sponsors of The Dream Act 2005 are Hagel (R), Lugar (R), and Durbin (D). (More info read my article on this website The Dream Act: The Time is Now)
Josh Bernstein, NILC director of federal policy argues:
"Young people facing high school graduation and major decisions about college or work should not be asked to wait until Congress resolves all other vexing immigration issues. Rather, Congress should act now and take these young people off the field of battle of the immigration wars."
Economic Benefits of The Dream Act for the United States:
1) Increased income and positive fiscal impact-- College students earn more and pay more taxes into our system than kids who drop out of high school because: (quote from my students) "Nothing matters... I'm illegal and have no future."
2) A Legal Work Force-- A quote from my students: "Ms? Where am I legal? Where can I go to be legal?" (Hint-- not Mexico since they came at six months of age and have no papers. Also, many do not speak Spanish and their parents are living here).
3) Reward Character-- The Dream Act rewards kids who stay in school, promise to become United States citizens and keep a clean legal record.
