I caught some of Lou Dobbs's show on CNN couple nights ago. In one segment he had two political "experts" on for him to throw "questions" at. One was Gloria Borger, I don't recall the name of the other guy.
But in all too typical CNN fashion, he used his pulpit to throw some red meat out there. In referring to the recent Dem debate, he ranted in a supposed "question". . . to paraphrase: "What's the matter with all the Democrats . . . they didn't debate immigration at all!!! . . . and everybody knows that is one of the top two issues in America!....."
Borger tried to tell him that at the beginning of the debate the moderator stated that they would NOT discuss Iraq or immigration . . . as those topics, she thought, had been done a lot lately.
The other "expert" tried to tell Dobbs that immigration is a hot issue only for the Republican debates and in Iowa and etc.
Dobbs didn't seem to want to listen. Between Dobbs and Glenn Beck and a few others who editorialize everything, or slant the discussion, or make stuff up . . . maybe it's time CNN just merged with Fox . . .they could have a new slogan . . . maybe, "All the news that's right, all the time."
ANd there might be a rare time Dobbs has written or said something I could agree with . . . at times about American jobs going overseas . . . for example . . . but even there he would need to criticize big business more for my support.
And while I expect the Republicans to create some supposed value issue, or cultural issue, or identify a new group we are all supposed to hate . . . for this election . . . .it's another matter when a major media network does it under the guise of being "news" or fair or whatever. Editorials are not news, but more and more are paraded around like they are, and CNN and Fox are not alone in this but leading the pack, methinks. I expect that Lou Dobbs is no dummy and knew full well what the national polls are and made his attack anyway.
But in spite of all this, I wanted to see if there was even one or two respected polls out, new, that I had missed and proved his point. I could not find any, but found several that showed, consistently, when asked, again to paraphrase the polling, what issues matter most to you, in a national poll of 18+ age people, immigration was 5th or 6th, typically. War and economic things, health care, all higher.
One source for this is: www.pollingreport.com
click "priorities" and it well return a list of numerous polls... see if I can paste the most recent in here:
CBS News/New York Times Poll. Dec. 5-9, 2007. N=1,133 adults nationwide. MoE ± 3.
"What do you think is the most important problem facing this country today?"
%
War in Iraq 25
Economy/Jobs 12
Health care 7
Immigration 4
Environment 3
Gas/Heating oil crisis 3
Poverty/Homelessness 3
Terrorism (general) 3
Other 36
Unsure 4
(Note: I had to type some of this in, there were format problems I don't care to fool around with)
If anyone has knowledge about this polling web site, good or bad, advise?? It looks ok to me but I have not used it before . . . even though we all are supposed to know that it can't be on the Internet (or TV, like Lou) unless it really is true....heh heh.
Write on.
