There continues an age old debate about how to reduce/eliminate racism in this country. The first step, I believe, is to eliminate they contrived idea of "race" to begin with. There is no more difference between myself and Louis Farrakhan, than there is between me and my partner. Genetically we are all homosapiens, period. Add to the mix the the concept of "culture" and you have a recipe for bigotry. Racists always point to the cultural differences in people to bolster their rationale for discrimination. If society really wants to confront blantant racism we must first eliminate both of these ideas. If a person with different skin color has "customs" different from your own, it needs to be viewed as part of AMERICAN culture. Not to confuse customs with heritage, if an American exhibits traits or behaviors different from our own, then necessarily they must be American customs. I have Italian ancestry, but my behavior is as American as anyone elses. By forcing society to call their ignorance what it is, we remove the sanctions for that ignorance. Racists must them call what they espouse by what it really is - I don't like someone because their skin is a different color than mine.

| I agree with AA's first four paragraphs. But I hit a wall early in the fifth paragraph when I got to American's right to hate. Maybe our founding fathers hated tyranny, but they didn't write anything enshrining our unalienable right to hate our fellow man. It is NOT American. Let's put it this way. I can't stop you from having your opinion. What's going on inside in your head is not my business. We do not have the thought police, and no one can arrest you for hating a race, creed, or color. BTW, they can't arrest you if you think you would like to blow up a plane; they can only arrest you if you attempt to act upon that desire. So go ahead and exercise your internal prejudices, if you like. But you have no right to externalize this prejudice and discriminate in such a way as to infringe upon the unalienable rights of your fellow man (U.S. citizen or not). And I would not revel in your biases and preconceptions if I were you. Yes, we all have them. We are all prejudiced in one way or another. But we should be striving to rise above these faults to the best of our abilities - not justifying them. |

| I'm guessing a couple of people were caught by the white kid black kid test, now they are pissed about it. I never said it was a good thing, and I made sure to say that it is only when you act out that you have crossed a line, but to simply think it...no crime in that because a lot of the time, you're right. I believe firmly in personal sergragation, if you don't want to live or work with a particular person based on color, religion, creed, you shouldn't have too, MOVE. That is fair as fair can be. Archie Bunker...now that is funny. |

Digg It!

In the Utopian Society that you must have visited in your dreams certainly someone there mentioned to you that what you are proposing is the blinding of every man woman and child on the planet.
Cultural differences, if you want to call them that are ways not only for people to distinguish between those of a common background which suggests a strong possibility of a shared moral code, shared ideals and feelings on a miriad of topic including those things about other cultures that you both agree with and disagree with, but it also assists in determining the viability of breeding and passing onto your offspring those traits and talents you believe they will need to survive.
Light skin burns in the Afican sun faster than does dark Black skin, the squint in the eyes of the nomadics Inuits living near the pole protect the eye better from the more direct sun of the polar region, and the light skin and relativly open eyes of the white Euopeans was best suited for the mild climates and mild sunlight of those regions in which they lived.
We are different, regonising that is not wrong, it is natural. Now acting out upon those as the sole deciding factor of whether you like of dislike someone is just stupid. However, and I have sadi this before, hating is not a crime. If you have a dislike for a certain race it is not illegal, it is a thought, nothing more, the action is illegal but not the thought. We have a right to hate in America, plain and simple and we will characterize certain people into certain groups based on those thoughts. This is profiling and contrary to popular belief we all do it every day. You think about it the next time you walk down a dark street and you a see a few black of mexican kids on one side of the street and a few white kids across the street, then decide which side you'll walk down... Does this make you a racist, no, it make you human. If you are black person you will feel more comfortable going down the side of the street where the kid most closely embody your ideas of a safe, good kid. If you were raised in the Hood you will follow the path most Hood-like. If you grew up in the suburbs, you choose the path most closely recongised as comfortable.
Now just for those of you who thought this out...The white kids were on motorcycles while cranking rap music and the black and mexican kids were wearing dress shirts and sweaters while singing bible hymms for their local church outreach program.
SO are you a racist now?
