Hi again,
Well, we have two weeks under our belts now in February and we still haven't seen a single article on page one of the Arizona Republic about the war in Iraq.
Wayne Gretzky, Janet Jones and the gambling allegations that have swirled around the Phoenix Coyotes have made page A1 a couple of times this past week. We’ve also had urgent, pressing stories about a weight-loss medication that hasn’t yet been approved, a quarter that hasn’t yet been designed, and fraternity houses that will temporarily not be allowed to have alcohol. We even had the front page news that the word “cool” is still cool.
It must not be “cool” however, to provide any kind of prominent acknowledgement that we are still fighting a war that has taken 2269 American lives, nine more in the week since I last wrote. This month alone, 27 U.S. soldiers and 56 Iraqi police and military personnel have been killed. 47 U.S. soldiers have been wounded and 141 Iraqi civilians have been killed in civil unrest that we seem unable to control.
Even when another Arizonan died, Corporal Brandon Schuck, of Safford, it couldn’t squeeze onto A1. Apparently we needed that space for a review of Janet Jones’ film career.
Is it possible that if the entire 20 member editorial board of the Arizona Republic, plus seven other top writers died in the course of two weeks that it would be scarcely mentioned in the paper? If it happened and it were covered prominently, would it be because those 27 lives are somehow worth more than the 27 lives given for the American military effort?
If there is truly any rationale for the lack of coverage of this war, I’d love to hear what it is.
Until next week,
Coooool

It would certainly be easier to do cancel my subscription, and I can tell you that I do _not_ rely on the Republic for my news. Even if I cancelled my subscription though, it would still, leave us with a local paper that does a horrible job in covering national and international news, and there are a large number of people who _do_ turn there for their news coverage. It may be quixotic, but I'll continue to call them out in any forum possible, and invite others to join. I've been writing letters to the editor, but also sending paper copies to the top editors and presidents and board directors. When I didn't get response from the editorial staff, I broadened my emailing list to include as many of the writers as I could. (Their email addresses are generically firstname.lastname@arizonarepublic.com). I cross post my complaints here and invite others to speak up as well. The letters truly write themselves. Join the fun. Call me naive and idealistic, but public polls show that the majority of Americans are against this war. Additionally, I'd wager that of the minority who are in favor of it, a large proportion are relatively clueless about the realities of the war. I'm sure they have no understanding of the costs of this war in terms of lives, dollars, wounds, lost opportunities, and international goodwill. I'd like to think that they are capable of learning if the media would only cooperate. But that's just me off in fantasyland, tilting at windmills.

Sca-Rew the windmills! My letters to the Republic writers, particularly the incendiary ones directed to a few of the editorial staff, have always yielded replies and often have produced a meaningful dialogue. I wouldn't advocate anyone subscribe to that newspaper but I have real doubts about the effectiveness of a boycott. Hey, there are lots of uses for newsprint -- take up origami or papier mache' or fishing...

Captainmarvel, Keep writing! I have gotten some dialogue with writers, far more, actually, than I have with any of the editorial staff. Most of them seem to agree, but claim that they are powerless to effect any change there. I offer support and they encourage our continued criticism.
