I need to be very clear up front...I am a huge dog lover! They are the coolest pets when you open the door at home and they are all over you. Totally unconditional love.
Was I upset that a dog was left in a car to bake? Yes! It is a big mistake! Especially when it is a highly trained police dog that has a tremendous purpose to the well being of society. People with pets (or working dogs) need to have responsibility for their animals.
I am of the understanding that Sergeant Lovejoy accidentally left the dog in the car after a member of his family was having some sort of a problem that needed immediate attention. He simple forgot. It still is not forgivable, but it was an accident. The Lovejoy family was devastated by what had transpired.
What really got my goat about this story was the way that Sheriff Joe looked almost distraught at the press conference yesterday to announce the arrest, a press conference that the Sheriff's department arranged. Sheriff Joe is the champion of all animals in Maricopa County! It just struck me that Sheriff Joe planned all of this as another one of his publicity stunts and this time he may have gone to far. Did Sheriff Joe do this for publicity? I think the answer unfortunately is obvious. Is he going to develop a P.R. nightmare with other law enforcement agencies? I think the answer is yes.
I do think Sergeant Lovejoy should be responsible for his actions and pay the price just like any other citizen. No Officer is above the law, especially the ones that they are to enforce. I just don't think that it should be sensationalized to benefit the Sheriff Joe P.R. machine.
What do you think?

| Sherriff Joe is a publicity hound, as you say. Someone I met high up in Az DPS told me that serious law enforcement people think of him as a buffoon, or a joke. But . . . as far as the dog goes . . . what if it was your dog? I was wondering why the Chandler Police Dept. didn't take this on right away, and perhaps, as you say, suspend him without pay, etc. Or some action resulting in a fine, community service; I think they left it open perhaps, but maybe they did something and I missed it. --Write on. | If it were my dog he killed (or I killed), I'd feel pretty angry and upset. But is that "criminal" negligence or an awful accident? A couple of weeks ago a mother accidentally ran over her infant while backing up her SUV in her driveway. Does she go to jail, or should Sheriff Joe ticket her at the funeral?

| The man's son was in a car accident. he was told this right as he got home. He went into parent mode which is "Where's my kid and is he ok" The dog was an unintended consequence of a much larger situation. This is Sheriff Joe grandstanding to get right where he wants to be, in the news. |

| AA, Thanks for letting me know what the family issue was. I knew that it was something big with the family. I also agree with Kevin, why is this not an issue with the Chandler police? Why is Sheriff Joe taking the responsibility for this? That is aside from his perceived lack of TV time. Maybe I don't understand the jurisdiction of this, but the dog was part of the Chandler Police Department, not Maricopa County. This issue should be dealt with In Chandler and not in front of Sheriff Joe's podium. It is still very sad and tragic that the dog lost it's life. If it were mu dog, I would be besides myself. Sheriff Joe must stop his personal agenda and tackle more pressing issues for the County. He is, after all, being paid by us, the taxpayers. I don't think that developing such a strong P.R. machine is in his job description. |

| The fact that this is getting so much press is annoying to me. In this country, we seem to be obsessed with the treatment of animals more than the treatment of human beings. We have seven soldiers that died in Iraq this week, and yet this story and Woopie Goldberg's (supposed media interpetation of defending Micheal Vick's treatment of animals) statement on "The View". I think we need to get our priorities straight. |

| Zan, Excellent point! I could not agree with you more. The problem we have with this situation is that a person who is in a position of authority is the one giving the situation all of the light! Like I said, these people that we elect need to take care of more pressing issues! |

| Mr. Thinker, You asked why Sheriff Joe involved, as if we didn't know. One would also have to ask why the Sheriff of Maricopa County is using our municipal law enforcement to patrol the border. I thought we had Border Patrol for that, and now the civilian Minutemen. Before you know it, Sheriff Joe will be deploying cops to secure Anbar Province, feed the Sudanese, and crack down on whores in the Red Light District of Amsterdam. |

| When I lived in Tennessee. Some people called to complain about a neighbors barking dog! The cop that showed up . . . pulled out his gun and shot the English Bulldog dead! It made the nightly news! It is different in the deep south
