I know this idea will not catch on, and it's a shame. In a few weeks Cinco de Mayo is coming. I wish all the bars and beer companies would not promote it this year, or any year going forward that we have these giant Pro-Illegal Marches like we had a few weeks ago. I hope all Americans will not go to bars celebrating it either. As I said in another article, "Let the backlash begin with me".
There is money to be made promoting it and a lot of people look forward to that day like they do St. Patrick's Day but the Irish are not asking us to allow them free access to our government handouts and they are not trying to force us to speak Gaelic.
I will not be celebrating it this year for the simple fact that I now find it offensive as hell. I will however focus all my merriment on Memorial Day, when we remember those who died for our freedom and Quatro de Julio. And after that little jab, I also think I will stop referencing anything else in Spanish. This is America, not Northern Mexico as many would have you believe. If the Mexicans want to celebrate the 5th of May they can in their own way, just like we all celebrate those cultural events we hold dear, but I do not think that any true blooded American concerned with the current situation pertaining to immigration should actively push anything Mexican.
My disgust with recent events has actually lead me to launch my own educational campaign. When my wife or I are in a business, whether it be a restraunt, theater, clothing store or mini-mart, I have started listening to the people closely. When I hear bastardized English being spoken to customers I immediately ask for the owner or manager and I tell them the following:
"I will no longer be spending my money here. Your employees do not speak English worth a damn, I can't understand them, they can't understand me, so I will be taking my business elsewhere."
Interestingly enough, the four or five times I have made these comments (always on the floor in front of other customers) I have gotten immediate support from those around me. A few have even followed me out of the store and said they will be doing the same for a while until this thing is figured out in an America first fashion. One Chinese guy got so mad after I said it that he told the clerk, "Learn English, I had too." The way I see it, if I support the problem with my money, I am not that upset. If I really don't like it, how can I in support the practices. So I had to drive across the street to get a Whopper instead of a Big Mac (BIG DEAL), at least the woman there knew what I meant the first time out. I have also stopped buying imported beer from Mexico and have turned instead to Hinny as a replacement. It might be German, but what the hell, they aren't in the midst of a quiet invasion of my country.
Don't get me wrong, I don't hate foreigners, I do however feel that the current situation demands that I sacrifice for the things I believe in. If I can get even one or two companies to think about it, a McDonalds where I do not have to repeat "Big Mac" three times before they get it, or point to the cigarettes I smoke because the person working there doesn't understand the words "Marlboro Lights", these stores might start thinking ahead and ensure that their people speak our language.
This will help the foreigners too. They will gain valuable skills (English) which will help them get an even better job down the line, thus providing a better income and a better life for themselves and their kids. It might even resullt in some newly arrived Americans having learned the language before they got here knowing that if they didn't they won't have found work. Assymilation is much easier when we all are reading from the same page in the same language.
If we really want to send a message (because most of us have to work during "Protest Marches") rebuking these Pro-Illegal rallies, let's start hitting people where it hurts, in the pocket. Tough Love? Perhaps...
So enjoy the 5th of May as you would any other day in this free-est land on Earth, just don't celebrate it with a Corona, Dos XX or an Azteca, drink a Bud, Miller, Coors or my favorites, Jack or Jim and celebrate it the good old fashion American way.
But what would I know, I'm just a Natural Born, English Speaking, Tax Paying, God Fearing, Average American.
