The Senate and House versions of the Defense Appropriations bill are now in House-Senate conference committee to resolve their differences.

The Senate version has Senator John McCain’s amendment prohibiting torture of detainees by the U.S. government.

Incredibly, the current President of the United States of America has threatened his very first veto because of that amendment.

Vice President Cheney and CIA Director Porter Goss urged Sen. John McCain to support an exemption because “the president needs maximum flexibility” to torture people in secret dark places.

The issue will in all likelihood be decided in private by four key members of the committee:
Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska)
Rep. C. W. Bill Young (R-Florida)
Sen. Daniel K. Inouye (D-Hawaii)
Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pennsylvania)
