Charles Goyette wants an apology from conservatives. He thinks he is due this apology based on second hand information he has collected about the President of the United States allegedly making comments about how he [The President] was mislead by Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfield on the reasons to go to war with Iraq.
As I listened to his show today and heard him repeatedly ask for "my frigen apology", "my damn apology" and heard him say how he was "owed" this apology, I thought to myself, OK, I'll give him one.
Before I do though, I would like to ask Mr. Goyette why a talk show host would base a request, no a demand, like this on hear say? He even went so far as to site an article about Barbara Bush being upset with Cheney for leading "her little boy a stray", I believe that is the way he put it. Whatever, on to the big APOLOGY.
Charles, I am a conservative and I am sorry. Sorry for the 14 month delay in the invasion because we were waisting all that time trying to get the French and Germans behind us. Sorry for waisting the time on foreign powers that were in bed with Saddam and the Oil-for-Food Program for which these same countries received kickbacks.
I am sorry for even bothering to attempt to get the U.N. to pay some lip service to an idea that they themselves had threatened Saddam with 17 times. I am sorry that George Bush had to be the one to do something about Iraq when Clinton sat in the White House for 8 years prior doing next to nothing about the situation.
I am sorry that in the 14 months it took to rebuild our military machine after it was gutted by an impeached philanderer, we didn't do a better job of watching where Saddam moved the weapons of Mass Destruction that Bill Clinton, Al Gore, John Kerry, Hillary Clinton and Ted Kennedy told us about before Bush was ever in office.
I am terribly sorry that the Clinton administration took so many steps to limit the effectiveness of our intelligence agencies by erecting walls that kept them from sharing any information about the 9/11 hijackers and that these walls very possibly kept law enforcement from catching these terrorist before they had a chance to strike.
The thing that I am most sorry for is that you have absolutely no idea of the history of this conflict prior to George Walker Bush becoming President. It seems a shame that such a well read and highly acclaimed talk show host would think he was owed an apology from conservatives after you have gone out of your way to constantly send mixed signals about America's cohesiveness to our enemy during a conflict where so many of our brave men and women are risking their lives for your very right to speak at all. That's right, what happens in Iraq will determine when and if another attack is carried out on the U.S..
When the total body count of this conflict is tallied, I hope you and the others who are so vocally against this conflict take the time to write the apology letters to each and every one of the family members of those lost in action due in no small part to the enemy feeling empowered by the supposed strife back here at home.
I want to make it clear to you Charles, I do not deny, nor would I ever deny, your right to speak your opinion on the subject. However, sometimes it might be more beneficial to state your opinion with an idea of how to end this conflict in a way that will not endanger the progress already made in Iraq. The U.S. has made great strides towards stability in this part of the world. Libya has turned over all the information about their weapons programs and elections are happening all over the region from Afghanistan to Saudi Arabia. You might not be happy with the speed of this progress or the outcome of the elections, but it is more movement towards peace than has happened at any other time in history save the Crusades.
Maybe the fact that you have a right does not always mean you should exercise it, or if you do, it should be accompanied by a certain amount of responsibility for how you exercise it.
But what do I know, I am just an Average American. Sorry Charles.
