The framers of the FISA Act were obviously concerned about ‘accusation by association’ being insinuated in place of the fundamental American principle of ‘just cause’. They understood that “The Fascists you will have with you always”, to paraphrase a highly regarded source, and were trying to protect Americans against the certainty of such a power grab.

These Fascists are in a hurry, and they see this as their potential opening to reinstate the divine right of kings, placing the president above the law.  They see this as a latch point in their crusade to ratchet us up to a dictatorship of the religious ultra-right.

Letter to the Editor:
 
George II would be the Holy American Emperor, answering only to God.  Tom Delay, Dick Cheney and other powers behind the throne embrace and promote a Biblical view of the world, while King George II rides the steed of “Moral Clarity” that none may oppose him.
 
The Religious Right rejoices in the fulfillment of their interpretation of Biblical prophecy.  The players are in place.  The terrorists on 9/11 provided the license.  Sizable but unorganized opposition can be disregarded.
 
What has emerged with great clarity is their intention to shrink-wrap the nation and the world in a fundamentalist religious theocracy that is colorblind – it sees everything in the subtle hues of black or white.   “You’re for us or against us.” 
 
“But the Iraq war raises the question of whether Bush's resolve gets in the way of prudent judgment.”  So says Robert Robb (“Bush’s moral clarity, resolve not enough”, Friday, August 13, 2004).
 
The Roman Republic was transformed into an empire under the Caesars, and then, over time, metamorphosed into the Holy Roman Empire.  George II proposes to skip the empire phase and move us directly into the holy empire phase. 
 
Now that’s a moral with a scary clarity, by George!
