On the net this week there has been much discussion about the Republicans looking for some kind of compromise on the immigration issue. Senators Kyl and co-author of the current bill, McCain are clearly in favor of the guest worker plan and amnesty for those already illegally residing here in the United States. After spending a few minutes at www.azgop.org it has become clear that so far as the Republican rank and file in Arizona is concerned, this is indeed a pivotal issue. Arizona State Chairman Randy Pullen recounted in his blog that 1600 Republicans voiced, either over the phone, e-mail or in person, their disapproval of the plan as currently written with only 8 voicing support.

This message is for any Republican serving in the state of Arizona. Get off this boat. It is heading for the shallow rocks and all hands might be lost. Contrary to popular belief, Arizona Republicans are not mushrooms and can clearly see that this bill as currently written lacks the teeth to properly punish those employing illegal aliens, does little if anything to stop the rising tide of illegal immigration in our state and has been ill-conceived as an amnesty plan while eluding to that portion as some kind of repayment by way of fine while finding themselves at the back of the line.

Apparently it is Senator Kyl who is getting the most heat for this bill, even though it is McCain who is sponsoring it. Perhaps McCain has been able to slip under the radar by simply not being in Washington as assumed he would be for votes on a great many issues recently. I can understand the fire aimed at Kyl especially in light of the comment he made after finding out that both Hannity and Combs of the Fox Network were both upset about the bill. As expected from those two, Hannity says it isn’t strong enough on enforcement and Combs feels it is to harsh.  Kyl’s almost childlike response paraphrased, “I must be doing something right is both sides are mad at me”.

Senator Kyl, a simple question for you sir, was Combs ever going to vote for you? I think not. Why are we making light of an issue that is once again in the forefront of the American politic? In 1968 or again in 1986 this should have been handled. Are you really happy with a bill that fails to address the problems of illegal immigration or are you content to allow another Congress in 10-15 years take up the mantle of national sovereignty while you slip off into the sunset with this extremely important issue yet again un-resolved?

This is your time in office and you should be fighting for a real solution, not for a sound bite.

But what would I know; I’m just an Average American (registered voting Republican).
