Is America in the kind of decline historically identified during the last 100 years of the Roman Empire, or are we entering a time of adjustment when we have to find our place in the world and identify for ourselves the role we will now play as Rome did when it was split in two parts in the first millennium?

This is the question I pose to you all.

While America does not seem to be on the verge of splitting in two I can’t help but wonder what will become of this great country in the next 100 years. Rome stood for at least a thousand years before having to reinvent herself and settle into a role of partner with the European world leaders that came to dominate the second millennium. America is just 231 years old with little more than 100 years of additional history prior to becoming an independent country and already we have to ask what the future will hold. Rome’s might at the time was not unlike ours today, the predominant economic and military power, Rome slowly fell away from being a major player on the world stage as she collapsed from within. Meanwhile other nations, mostly in Europe grew stronger as her might subsided, not because of her shrinking importance but as a reaction to it. Power fills voids with new sources of control and might.

Will we become a more reasonable (in the eyes of our adversaries) partner in world affairs or will we continue on as a lone power in the world compelling those who are against us to give up or be forced to succumb while encouraging those who stand for similar ideals to become subservient to our will as they will benefit from it as well? Or as seen through the eyes of many will America just become a nation with military might while lacking the moral character to use it properly?

Can America become the very best we have to offer as we have been in the past? Can a lone Super-Power or Hyper-Power lead the world into a better tomorrow encouraging friendly nations to become more friendly and hostile nations to put away the fear they feel due to our size and strength and teach them to see us as benevolent leaders who wish them no harm while trying to change them from the inside and showing them that their way of life is counter productive to their own needs and to the needs and peace of their neighbors?

These questions are not to be thought about lightly. The answers to these questions can give us the insight we need to move forward in the wake of our American identity which at the moment seems to be in question throughout the world.

I for one believe we are a nation where the good outweighs the bad. That we have within us an inherent goodness and a desire to help those we can while defending those who need defending and that America can still be the guiding light through a dark time when terror runs ramped through not just the Middle East but is just as likely to hit in almost any major world city. But I ask myself, is there a leader who can bring this together? I am not naïve, we will always have detractors in the world, any power does, but can we gain ground, introduce freedom and exercise our demons while securing our own lands, protecting our friends and winning over our enemies? I believe we can and will because if we do not, the future will again be dominated as was our worlds past, with giant realignments of power and those bent on power for the sake of power will show to be far worse and far less caring about the world as a whole than we are.

But what would I know; I’m just an Average American.
